I have never found it necessary to use an "NFO" file to add a movie or TV show to my KODI library... however recently I purchased a great PBS show/DVD called "Humanity from Space" and want to put it in my KODI library... (it's a single standalone show)... I transcoded it to "Humanity From Space.mp4" placed it into a directory named "Humanity From Space with the rest of my individually sub-foldered TV shows in my TV shows content directory and attempted to add it (by auto scanning for new content)... unsucessfully... as it was not listed on "TheTVdb.com"... I tried and failed to list it there myself (not sure why but it was rejected)... I then decided to add it to my library by creating an NFO file...

I went to http://kodi.wiki/view/NFO_files/tvepisodes

...and copied the NFO file... which I then renamed "Humanity From Space.nfo"... placed it in the "Humanity From Space" directory along with the "Humanity From Space.mp4" and proceeded to modify all the elements of the "Humanity From Space.nfo" file so as to have it represent the information relevant the "Humanity From Space.mp4" TV show and then scanned for new content... it just would never add it... I gave up after about a dozen NFO edits/tries...

Any assistance/clarifications would be very much appreciated...

.nfo file needs to be labelled: tvshow.nfo
.nfo for episodes match the episode name

i.e.
Humanity From Space - S01E01 -xxxxxxxxxx.mp4
Humanity From Space - S01E01 -xxxxxxxxxx.nfo
tvshow.nfo

Still a little confused... so in this case where there is only (1) episode I would name my mp4 file
"Humanity From Space - S01E01 - arbitraryname.mp4" and then create a nfo file which would have the same name
i.e. "Humanity From Space - S01E01 - arbitraryname.nfo" (with this file containing all the show relevant info ?)

... but does that mean I also need to create a nfo file named "tvshow.nfo" ? ... and if so what info would be contained in that nfo file ?

i.e.
Humanity From Space - S01E01 -xxxxxxxxxx.mp4
Humanity From Space - S01E01 -xxxxxxxxxx.nfo
tvshow.nfo

Thanks for the great info... it is now in my TV shows library !

One last question if anyone is still looking at this... I have one more two part question...

the graphic that would be displayed when I highlight the "Humanity From Space" directory in my overall TV Shows listings (currently there is no graphic)... which thumb (jpg) pointer in which nfo file is that ? ... and all the thumb representations in the example files point to http... locations... so do the thumbs have to exist out on the web ? or could I use a local graphic on say one of my smb shares ?

this should point you in the right direction, no need to call out the artwork in the NFO file

Tip: You could do without the .NFO

IMDB has this listed as a TV Movie, not a TV series - and its not found on TheTVDB. Add it to your Movies-source instead, and either temporary change the Movie source global (while scraping) scraper, or just the scraper for the subfolder containing the Humanity From Space.mp4 file - to the "Universal Movie Scraper". I'd advice adding "(2015)" in the filename and/or containing subfolder (e.g. /files/source/movies/Humanity from Space (2015)/Humanity from Space (2015).mp4 ) - for better scraper hit success rate.
