If it's the standard Windows share with a network folder then it will be SMB/CIFS.
If you look on the MyCloud's web dashboard you may see options for the other methods. Personally I prefer NFS, as for me it's faster as I'm streaming from the MyCloud Mirror (a Linux-based device) to a Raspberry Pi (also a Linux based device) and NFS is optimised for that.
In your case as you're streaming to a Windows PC then you should be OK either way, but it may be worth a try if you want to experiment (and if the MyCloud supports it of course). Just turn it on and then when you add your source in Kodi, one of the available options should be NFS (it's normally up near the top of the list on the browse new share screen). Then just point that at the name/IP address of the MyCloud and take it from there.
Anyway glad it's working now, albeit in rather mysterious circumstances...
