Multiple cores are particularly useful in decoding HD h.264 video, with that CABAC patch from a few months ago.

Wow, someone hasn't read much of this thread. 
And the CABAC patch mentioned above works against video encoded far further back than a few months ago. XBMC began supporting it then but nothing special, near as I can tell, needs to be done to videos to see benefit. XBMC is VERY much multithreaded and it REALLY shines on high bitrate HD video.
