Intel atom for x264
#1
Hi
Would this serve at least as good as an asrock e350m1?
https://www.cnet.com/products/acer-verit...-gb/specs/
I'm looking for something plays up to 1080p true hd, x264 cheaper than a hundie.
Second one if the intel nuc5cpyh is good for even x265?

Cheers

Raspberry Pi will play H264 1080p stuff with no problem at all. No need to go for an Atom or Intel.

My Pi is happily playing 50Mbs 1080p50 H264 stuff with no major issues.

That Nuc won't play 10-bit HEVC at any decent bitrate. I think it can play 8-bit HEVC. I recommend you skip straight to the apollo lake series which has full HEVC decoding, if you need windows. Otherwise if you just want kodi heaps of cheaper options.

Yep - Apollo Lake or AM Logic S905/S905X best bets for H265 10 bit decoding (best for future proofing). (S905 may only have 8-bit output path but decodes and plays 10 bit HEVC fine) Sub $100 I'd be looking at S905/S905X or Raspberry Pi solutions.

Pi is fine for 8 bit H264 stuff - and Pi 3 will do increasingly well with 1080/24p HEVC stuff (8 bit). Generation before Apollo Lake Atom and Pre-Kaby Lake Core-i based stuff will be HEVC 8-bit only, and then generation before that will be H264/MPEG2/VC-1 only.

This - because everything 8/10bit will be Hardware decoded without workarounds and will be a bit future proofed without costing you a fortune.

Do not rely on very limited RPi Software only HEVC(H265) decode solutions. 10bit will bring it to its knees.

S905 also does HD Audio Passthrough as well when using LibreELEC Kodi Krypton.

Job done.

Just a note - only H265/HEVC 10 bit stuff willl be hardware decoded. There is still no hardware acceleration for 10bit H264 stuff (aka Hi10)

Gee guys thanks for the answers.
Just a side note I knew already before I bought it for my ma, that the beelink x2 belongs to a trashbin but she only needs it for YouTube and older (so less good compressed) videos. And indeed it's simply not capable even of x264 very well. http://paste.debian.net/926669/ sorry for the horrible paste that was the best I could do with my phone. What I want to say is that I want to have a device which plays x265 excellent no excessive drops no audio delay etc.
The atom is old so it clearly has got no hw acceleration. But is the amlogic 905s not the same "almost good" crapware for 30-40 dollars as the beelink?
I'm ok with rbpi3 if it IS indeed good for my needs.
But is the atom mentioned above strong enough for a decent sw accelerated hevc playback?
My eyes and ears are very to extremely sensitive to drops and lags. I'm not a nerd and I wish I wouldn't see/hear those things. They're annoy me lol
Thanks again!

You need to use LibreELEC Kodi Krypton on a AMLogic S905 to get the best out of it.
Don't use Android Kodi at all on on dirt cheap Chinese Android Hardware.

The LE / S905 or S905X combo will play virtually anything you throw at it. Both Audio and Video.
There are a whole heap of us now using this LibreELEC setup.

https://forum.libreelec.tv/thread-5274.html

These S905's can even be setup as a dual boot - microSDHC card for LibreELEC - and internal memory for Android Apps.

There is literally an Army of S905 options - ODROID C2, WeTek Hub, Play2, MINIX U1 + the swarm of S905 clone boxes.

DO NOT rely on Software decoding for playback reliability.
Especially when dealing with demanding 8/10bit HEVC decoding. Otherwise you are asking for trouble.

You need to use Hardware decoding. Forget about Cheap platforms that cannot Hardware decode HEVC(H265).

If you want something that works, virtually out of the Box, without a lot of setup hassles - simply buy a S905 WeTek Hub and get something like a Wireless MINIX A2 Lite remote or an OSMC RF remote + a Samsung EVO or Sandisk Class 10 microSDHC and you will be virtually good to go.

Hw. I can do the magic with the software part even if it takes a bit more time for me lol

Yes - the Hub will dual boot between Android from internal storage and LibreElec (much better for Kodi) from uSD card. If you don't need Android (for Netflix etc.) then there are significantly cheaper solutions. I have a MiniMX as well as a Hub - and the performance of both is fine. (Still some audio/video sync offsets at times - but in general not bad. Certainly no 'lag' as people call it)

Yeah well the mini mx isn't really cheaper and it's harder to find. So I'll go for the wetek hub one more thing can I put libreelec (or any similar small linux arm (?)) on the internal memory instead of a sdcard? I find it more reliable and I guess nands or how they're called are faster than external cards if I'm right..

I believe you can (it's what I've done with my MiniMX - which was half the price of my Hub - so prices must have changed) - though you may need to be careful not to lose HDCP keys (which may be needed if you want to revert to Android for Netflix and other DRMed apps at a later point) (It may be those keys are in SPI flash not NAND flash though)

The uSD card route does work pretty well. LibreElec isn't disk intensive - unless you have a huge library stored locally - so the main benefit of installation to NAND flash is slightly faster boot-up time I guess.

I do like my Mini MX running from NAND though - it is very quick to start. (I've left the Hub Dual boot)

Beware those Hub's are Second hand - ie. used - and I would be pretty concerned about warranties if anything goes wrong because they are not New.

Have a look in this post that has links for Amazon - for new Hub's:

http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=...pid2565637

and you need these SD cards for the best performance with AMLogic devices:
Samsung EVO or Sandisk Class 10 microSDHC

Thanks for everything again.
Last q I swear haha:
Is the wetek play 2 just the same good as the hub? Just bc on the wetek.com you can get a play for only 99. And it's the official website at least.
And they've run out of all the stock but the play 2.

Yes - more RAM, more USB ports, Optical, better IR remote.

It's WiFi is slightly inferior to the Hub, but still fine for Streaming.

Its a AML S905, so LibreELEC will be virtually the same.
LibreELEC on the ODROID C2, WeTek Hub & Play2 all share the same common Linux Kernel and Patchset with only slight differences.
