A question of airport
#1
I have done a search and this question has been asked before and I read a lot of threads to no avail.

I have drobo attached to an airport extreme. I only started doing this today and on my mini its been a great success. XBMC and it are working fine.

On the ATV however not so lucky. I cannot get it to connect to the airport extreme.

I followed some instructions which are as follows:

on airport turn on sharing and allow read only for guests.
Restart it.
On XBMC turn on 'mount SMB shares'
Goto video and add source.
Browse and chose SMB protocol
Server is IP address of Airport
Leave shared folder and username blank
Password is password for Airport.
Click ok.

It should now appear as smb///192.168.1.10

But it does not it appears as smb///

Selecting it just takes you to the 'windows network (smb) dialogue.'

So can I confirm the above is the correct instructions?

I spoke to soon. Videos all play really badly, like it can;t get the data quick enough.

Here is the log, have I cocked up somewhere?

Specifically round about when this error occured there is a brief pause including sound in the film, like a hiccup, a number of these occured.

The connection feels odd. Where as in my WORKGROUP Smb I can see my other macs directly, I do not see my drobo directly its via something called VIGOR10, which is not the Airport but the router (Airport is in bridged mode)

Anyhow, any help would be great!

OK have sorted out the right paths I think so I now get an smb///192.168.1.10

Whilst choosing sources its really snappy but once back in videos its turgid. Picking one of the folders and it takes over 30 seconds to load it, starting films is ok but with all these pauses then stopping the films takes another 30 seconds.

Sigh.

Wifi isn't good enough to stream video, not even mpe4. Search the forums for why.

Its not wireless, gigabit throughout.

That being said I am not sure an ATV is gigiabit

OK found some logs on the Airport which would indicate the dropouts are a login in issue which is soon resolved. Most odd

What ever is causing the issues its specific to these lines:

cores/dvdplayer/PortaudioDirectSound.cpp:238]: Output underflowed.
09:18:56 T:43180544 M: 55627776 ERROR: [PortAudio] ERROR[/Users/d4rk/Code/XBMC/XBMC/xbmc/cores/dvdplayer/PortaudioDirectSound.cpp:238]: Output underflowed.
09:19:02 T:43402752 M: 51924992 ERROR: - Timeout waiting for previous frame to be presented
09:19:02 T:43180544 M: 51978240 ERROR: [PortAudio] ERROR[/Users/d4rk/Code/XBMC/XBMC/xbmc/cores/dvdplayer/PortaudioDirectSound.cpp:238]: Output underflowed.
09:19:33 T:43180544 M: 54677504 ERROR: [PortAudio] ERROR[/Users/d4rk/Code/XBMC/XBMC/xbmc/cores/dvdplayer/PortaudioDirectSound.cpp:238]: Output underflowed.

I deleted XBMC library and started again. I messed a bit with the airport and now it appears under windows network with no input from me so thats nice. Never the less this output underflowed is a constant, every minute or so causing hicups in the film. Does not matter what it is, AVI, straight rips, even smallish rips of Simpsons etc all the same.

try with the file local to the atv. this will see if the problem is with your network setup.

Hi Davilla. Well it is some issue specifically with the Airport and the ATV. I put the drobo on my mac downstairs and connected to it via SMB and its perfect (infact its how I used to have it beofre the nightmare that was droboshare)

I have a good network gigabit throughout all on ethernet. I have never encountered an network error until this, I just wondered if I had managed to set it up wrong.

I wonder what the underflow and discontinuity means?

(mind you underflow warnings persist with the drobo on the mac downstairs and it runs perfect to my eyes)

underflow means a queue has run out of data.

discontinuity means a jump in playback.

if a single frame gets bonked and skipped, you would never see it unless you looked really close.
