[LINUX] Benefit of using external libraries?
#1
What's the benefit of enabling external libraries when compiling XBMC?

I've read that the external build of FFmpeg doesn't support VDPAU so that won't work for me but I'm just curious what the benefits of the external libraries are.

Also, in the README.linux it lists a bunch of build dependencies but it includes all the external library dependencies. If I'm not including the external libraries, what dependencies would I need? (or will ./configure just bomb if it doesn't find what it needs?)

EDIT: Bonus question: The aptitude package of XBMC seems to be installed into /usr/share/xbmc but the default install for the SVN is /usr/local. If I wanted them to install to the same location would I need to specify ./configure --prefix=/usr ?
