Aeon performance on linux ?
#1
Hey guys

I successfully run aeon skin and love to see this skin, thanks a lot for this work Wink but i have a problem , it does not run very smooth , my htpc runs amd x2 2,3ghz with 2gb of memory and ati hd3200 card under ubuntu 9.04 . i think this should be enough performace to run XBMC smooth ?

is there any know issue with ati drivers or trick to increase the performace ?

thanks and kind regards,

i think this could be a problem of alpha blending or vsync with ati linux drivers, any known settings or issues ?

next things i found out , xbmc.bin uses arround 90% CPU on idle

also when i start xbmc first time after reboot everything works, close xbmc and run it again fails with black screen and this message

Quote:The XBMC_HOME environment variable is not set.
/usr/share/xbmc/xbmc-xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 157 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 21 ()
Serial number of failed request: 22
Current serial number in output stream: 22
/usr/share/xbmc/xbmc-xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

closing xbmc and start again (third time) everything looks fine ? Eek

xbmc.log looks fine to me , i'll post it later

some ideas ?

As has been mentioned drivers are to blame.
This is not normal:

Quote:X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 157 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 21 ()
Serial number of failed request: 22
Current serial number in output stream: 22

I suggest seeing if there is an update for your video drivers.

it seems that i solved the massive cpu load by activate vsync permanently in ati control center and set vync to 1 in guisettings.xml . Now the cpuload is arround 5-11% . But the performance under aeon and also with the normal skin are not better .

also today amd/ati released a new linux driver , i'll test it tonight , maybe the new driver solves the BadMatch issue.

with new ati driver (9.8) and xmbc (r22240) the BadMatch issue is solved and with vsync enabled + xbmc vync - let the driver choose , the performance is still oke but not smooth and fast

i tested skin mod's like aeon showmix and this one runs realy smooth and fast with exactly the same effects ?

You're not doing anything silly like using desktop effects are you?
Also if you happen to be only using this comp for XBMC and a few other things you
may want to consider a lightweight window manager as gnome is a bit of a resource hog.

XFCE, LXDE, Openbox, or Fluxbox for example.
