[LIVE] Hey! My processor is running full blast!

For some reason scaling was turned off in Live 9.11B. This should not be turned off by default. This should be considered a bug as it causes unnecessary power to be wasted when the media centre is used as a dvd player or a VCR and left on all day. I bought my unit because it is considered energy efficient. The whole concept of LIVE is that it makes any device into a user friendly media center, and it's not friendly to waste the user's power.

We really need a dev forum for the OS configuration for Live. Every version changes and who can keep up with all the little things that have to happen to make it work on every computer? The processor scaling option is on by default, someone turned it off. This is the kind of thing that can be avoided by having a "universal" configuration forum for LIVE, or at least a feedback thread where it can be discussed.

Scaling is there for applications like media centres. When you aren't using the processor, it will conserve power and drop down to like eg. 800mhz. When you are using the processor it scales up to eg. 1800mhz. Power scaling is there for for a combination of power and energy efficiency. If "power users" want it off , then allow them to modify it. For the average user, leaving their XBMC running all day it's a waste of power to have scaling turned off.

They are not versions...they are alphas and beta.

I totally agree with you, although not on topic, I've wondered why processors, when completely idle...aren't capable of throttling down to like say...10mhz..you know so they draw next to nothing. 800 mhz, or even 600 mhz is fine, but thats still 600 Mhz of wasted power.

Back on topic, how did you re-enable throttling?

No way jose. The last stable is not supported anymore. It has too many bugs and is about 6 months old.

The point of a dev forum would be the same as this thread. To point out dev issues in the releases. Live is a new concept as far as XBMC goes. Each version we learn things. Every release should be better then the last.

You do realize that a BETA is basically what will be released once the BETA TESTERS point out the flaws right?

well....I am pretty sure that throttling have been disabled in live on purpose for a while and in the Live sticky you will find this http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=49795

I do not know this for a fact but I assume that you need to reverse that process.

What I do know for a fact is that Live is best used as is. If too much tweaking is needed to get what you want it is less work to start with minimal or standard ubuntu depending on your competence.

^^hey 500 posts for you!

Not everyone has tearing issues. My processor runs at 20% when I'm watching a movie. It's fully unnecessary to have the processor running at WOT 24/7. That's a work-around for a select group of people that was encorperated into the latest version.

To enable this work-around properly, a command should be issued at the time of video rendering.

Thats right. When I do my xbmcbuntu installation I do not disable throttling and I have no problem on Asrock ION 330. Perhaps it is on older HW I do not know.

On the otherhand I do not have powernowd installed either, so I guess I am somewhere in the middle.

Throttling should be turned off by default. For the majority of users it can cause tearing and other playback issues with especially with igp's and vdpau.

Remember Live is supposed to make things easier for the majority of users. Tearing is unacceptable, using more power is.

If you don't like the live cd as it is, install it to hd or usb, or use xbmcbuntu or similar.

Throttling (cpufrequtils) is NOT turned off for me. Just the min freq in /etc/defaults/cpufreq (or similar) is set to 1,8ghz... Set it to the lowest state your cpu supports (in my case 1,6) and it will throttle properly. I do not have tearing that way. 1,6ghz E6300 (goes up to 2,8).
