Network issue - can connect to router but can't see SMB or Weather info.
#1
Hi,

I'm connected to my router, I have an IP address and my router shows an entry for XBMClive, but I can not share anything.

I have xbmc running on a laptop as well as my revo so I can check to see if the shares are working windows 7 to windows xp and they are. I have checked UPNP and SMB and they are both found automatically on my laptop.

I can not get them to work on my revo though. UPNP should just auto find anyway but i have tried finding my SMB automatically and also by typing in the name of my network abd also the name of the computer the share is on.

I can not change the weather locations or getting any actual weather readings from the weather channel so i believe there is a problem.

I can't ping the revo either.

the network page on xbmc has the following stats:

link: connected
MAC address:c:60:78:68:5B:1A but this only comes up every now and again the rest of the time it shows as busy
IP address:192.168.2.194
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway:192.168.2.1
Primary DNS:192.168.2.1
secondary DNS: blank
Internet: Not connected check network settings, Like MAC address this also shows busy most of the time.

Is it an issue that my gateway and primary DNS are the same?

In network settings -> internet access - I have nothing selected. Should I have use an http proxy sever to access internet ticked?

Seems like your revo doesent get a valid dns from your router.
Are you connected wireless or by cable ?

Usually you need to tweak your routers dhcp settings to get in working on ubuntu. If you could take a screenshot of your routers dhcp setuppage
i might be able to help you out.

Also could you do this and tell me the result ? :
hit ALT+CTRL+F2 to get a terminal window. if you have default setup
password and username is xbmc/xbmc

then type in:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
tell me result

Code:
sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
tell me content of the file

then also
Code:
ifconfig

If you also could enable Debug Log in xbmc, then restart the box
and post the full content of log. see my signature on how to post about a problem to see how to post debug log files.

also this post conteins much usefull info for you:

My router is a D-link DIR-655 and i'm connecting by wireless

its settings are:

DHCP SERVER SETTINGS

DHCP: Enabled
DHCP IP Address range: 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.199
DHCP Lease time: 1440 minutes
always broadcast:: enabled
NET BIOS announcment: not checked

all these results settings are greyed out.
Learn NetBIOS from WAN: Not checked
NetBIOS Scope: Blank (optional)
NetBIOS node Type: unchecked
Primary WINS IP Address: blank
SEcondary WINS IP Address: blank

ADD DHCP RESERVATION

Enable: unchecked

My Revo shows up in the Dynamic DHCP Client list as

0c:60:76:68:5b:1a
192:168.2.194

Network restart seems to go fine and i get bound to the IP above

I look into the debug file tomorrow morning, how do i enable it from within terminal?

I looked through that other link and the only thing i could see that i had not tried was selection NetBIOS announcement and selecting mixed mode- broadcast then point to point. This has not solved my problem. Do i need to enter anything in to either the WINS IP address field or NetBIOS Scope fields?

thanks for the help.

Seems like you actually have wireless setup correctly in your box, atleast on the ubuntu side of things. while im far from a linux expert i have heard
that running two networks at the same time is not adviced. However i do it and
it seems to work fine.

I run the latest official xbmc-live-usb distro with no updates or mods.
You could always try to boot from that on your box to see if problems exist there to. Then you rule out any bad-config.

Also have you tried with your networkcable physically removed ?
Also you could from terminal do a ping google.com and let it run for a few minuts then stop and se if you have any packet drops or such.

But a Debug Log from a session where you reproduce the behavior is probably smart.

I'm running xbox live 9.11 rc1 and the only thing i have done is enable wlan0 auto start up.

Your answer above suggests i'm running 2 netwokrs, I'm only running one network, which paty suggests i'm running 2?

Also how do i enable debug from terminal? I read the post in your signiture but it didn't say.

Something might be funky with the routing table. Please post the result from

#route -n
and
#ping -n1 8.8.8.8
and
#dig google.com @8.8.8.8

try to ping 130.192.3.21 (dns server of Turin Polytechnic)
if ko something wrong in gateway settings/routing table if ok
ping http://www.google.com
if ko u have a dns problem
replace dns address in /etc/resolv.conf

I have to stick sudo before these to make them do anything, but they all bring back the same results.

Code:
Usage: Sudo [-n] -h : -K : -k : -L : -V : -v

Usage: Sudo -l[l] [-Ans] [-g groupname:#gid] [-u username] [-u username:#uid] [-g groupname:#gid] [command]

Usage: Sudo [-AbEHnpS] [-C fd] [-g groupname:#gid] [-p prompt] [-u username:#uid [-g groupname:#gid] [VAR=value] [-i:-s] [ <command>]

Usage: Sudo -e [-Ans] [-C fd] [-g groupname:#gid] [-p prompt] [-u username:#uid] file ...

pinging the IP looks fine (i think), i get 64 bytes returned ttl=239 at various times 30-60 seconds, it ran 66 times.

Pinging google brings up:
Code:
ping: unknown host www.google.com

I also tried to acess this /etc/resolv.conf. I typed Sudo /etc/resolv.conf thenit asked me for my password and then then said

Code:
sudo: /etc/resolv.conf: command not found

Is that the problem? am i missing the resolve command? if so how do i add it?

Can anyone tell me how to activate the debug log whilst using XBMCLive? I guess i have to do it via terminal?

I should have been more specific. Don't type the #

But, since you got a a reply when pinging the ip, you don't have to.
Instead, type

sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf

is this file remove all lines and instead add

nameserver 8.8.8.8

then try pinging google.com again

The only lines in that file were :

Nameserver 192.168.2.1

This is the IP of my router.

i changed it to 8.8.8.8 saved then typed ping http://www.google.com but had the same result as before ping: unknown host http://www.google.com

I've restarted and checked the resolv file and it has reverted back to my routers ip, so i changed it to 8.8.8.8 again, but still no luck.

I've tried pinging my router and my laptop but neither of these work regardless of what ip is listed next to name server

I also tried to ping 130.192.3.21 after changing the nameserver to 8.8.8.8 and it said:

ping 130.192.3.21 (130.192.3.21) 56(84) bytes of data

Then it looked like it was hanging?

I gave it a while then pressed a few random keys and it said
182 packets transmitted 0 received 100% packet loss

That's pretty strange.
Now it seems again like you don't have any connection at all.Try:

ping -w1 8.8.8.8

If you get a reply your conneciton works, and it is a issue with resolving domain names. If so try:

dig google.com @8.8.8.8

Note the space before the @! If you do not get a reply there, but the ping command worked, your router is blocking the connection.

If the previous dig command worked try:
dig google.com

If that didn't work, but ping and dig #1 did, you have a typo in /etc/resolv.conf

I can't get the dig command to work this is what i can see

andy@XBMCLive:~$ dig google.com @8.8.8.8
-bash: dig: command not found.

okay finaly sorted it, but it was a bit strange...

I read in one of the ohter post a guy who was having a similar problem reset his router to factory settings and that solved his problem. I did that a few days ago but after resetting i changed the default IP address from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.2.1 as thats what all my stuff is set to work with. As i was running out of ideas i decided to change it back to the default of 192.168.0.1 and it now works!

Thanks for all the help. Smile
