Map Keys via XBMC

one feature that wold be nice is the ability to edit keymap.xml via xbmc.

it could be done with several preset options, and the option to customise.

while this seems like a great idea at face value, there are a few thorny issues to work through.

1. there are different mappings for different windows - we need a way to obviously change the actions for each window.

2. once the user can do this from within xbmc, there is the problem of them creating an irretrievable cockup. ie. they have the potential to map the select action to the same button as left, and depending on how it is handled, whenever the user pressed the select button, it would move left instead of allowing a selection to be made.

perhaps you can come up with some ideas to circumvent these problems?

why not just ignore the custom keymapping for this ettings screen and use a hardcoded mapping instead. like up/down to select the action and a to select the action (then you can press the button you wanna map to this action).

how about having two or three pre-defined settings, that users can select. and possibly include the option to save current settingsHuh

you could dispay the preset configs graphically like when selecting gamepad options in some games.

this feature could possibly be then improved upon in xbmc2.

ok, number 2 above has been addressed quite well. i think the best thing to do in this case is to lock in some of the keys (in particular the select key, and the arrow keys) and don't allow these to be changed at all. other actions can then be assigned to other buttons easily enough.

what should be done about number 1?

jmarshall,

what about the way sport games do it? just a central place to redefine your controller/keys. that location has different tabs to change offense, defense, goalie, etc...

not sure this is what you are after? seems like a lot of work needed though.
