[Live] TV Tuner

What's the best method of connecting a TV Tuner to an Acer Revo 3610 with XBMC Live installed.

Is the Revo 3610 powerful enough to watch & record live TV.

Do I need a full installation of ubuntu or can I keep XBMC Live.

You will have to install a DVR "backend" software. The most popular choices are MythTv, VDR, Tvhead. The Revo should do fine.

Thanks for that, I have read a little bit about backend software but wasn't sure I could do it on a XBMC Live or would need a full Ubuntu installation. What's the best hardware I could use with the Revo, guess it would be a USB Tuner. Will any do or as it's Linux do I need to be more particular.

I'm sure it's possible to add a backend to a XBMC live install, but if you haft to ask it may be easier to do a full ubuntu install. It really just depends on your comfort level with Linux. You will have to do your homework.Wink

Yeah, you will want a usb tuner. Assuming your in the US and your going to use an antenna, you want one that does atsc (8vsb)

This would be a good place to start your research for a usb tuner for Linux.

No, I'm located over the water - so I'm gonna need a PAL Tuner rather than NTSC.

The upcoming new XBMC release is supposed to have PVR features built in.

I have an ASROCK 330 so will need a USB TV tuner also but I'm waiting for the new XBMC release before I jump in with configuring anything to get it working.

can you or somebody else provide some info to back this up? seems like a pretty huge development step.

The implementation in XBMC will still need a backend to be setup it won't directly support a TV tuner itself - and never will afaik.

Also I believe some of the devs mentioned that PVR support would not make it into 10.5 (despite what the roadmap says).

I'm using a Hauppauge Nova-T USB Stick with the HTS-TVHeadend backend to watch live tv on my XBMC system. To record stuff you need to use a browser, most likely on another computer, to select what you want to record from the EPG, it can't be done through XBMC yet. The web interface for recording is great and really simple.

I did buy a cheapo DVB-T USB tuner off eBay but it didn't work with Linux so beware. Check out the LinuxTV link - http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/DVB-T_USB_Devices - posted by Redneck. That's a great list of devices that will work out of the box.

I'm using a minimal ubuntu installation so I'm not too sure if it all works with Live.

True, the PVR won't make 10.05. Read this:
