questions for g4 mini and a noob
#1
So I've had xbmc on my xbox 1 for a while, but I finally got it on my:
1.5ghz g4 mac mini
10.4.11 osx
1gb ram
80gb hdd

Ive got a few questions to make it run smoother. This is being setup for my parents, so it needs to be sort of idiot proof; as much as that can be.

I have the new camelot 9.11 ppc build on it, 2009-12-26. It runs good for doing SD video and a dvd, perfect.

But since it is a mac mini I have no eject button. I've searched and found a few "work arounds" like making a favorites, an eject script. What are my options for ejecting? Is there a skin with the eject button built in? can I script it to a keyboard function?

To play a DVD, the default skin, if not set to auto play, just shows the TS folders. I found the xtv skin able to just play the dvd. Am I just at the mercy of a skin? I see the xbmc function list has "play dvd", is there a way to make that a favorite as well, or script that to a button?

Which ppc OS is the most efficient to run xbmc on a g4? I was doing some reading and it seemed some people recommended 10.4. Now 10.5 will run on it and some linux distro's too (no flash though I think). Does running 10.X server help at all?

Is there a good remote at all, that doesnt cost $100+ for osx? I see some people hacked together a ps3 remote, not to bad for buttons. The logitec dinovo looks awesome but at the price its pretty out of my price range for this project.

I haven't tried it myself yet, but if your using Confluence like I assume you are, there is an Eject feature built into the latest nightly build so just clicking the DVD play button on the main menu brings up the option.

Yes I was on confluence; tried the other packaged in skin (forgot the name), xtv and transparency! but couldn't find a eject in any. I can try a nightly build though.

For the remote question. I may have to search more to see how you configure a remote to work in xbmc, but its been so hard finding a good remote to use on this non IR mac...I think I found one I really like. Its IR w/ usb added reciever, simple, has just enough buttons to make it highly usable:

Keyspan URM-15T (URM-17A can also control itunes via airport extreme) both look the same.

Also I found this site with the remote buddy, its a pay app but they have a good list of working remotes:

Cheapest way to get a remote seem to be the wiimote, ps3 remote or the keyspan; that actually have minimal buttons and are functional for non ir macs. Anyone have input on that?

Download the latest nightly: http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/osx/ppc/
To play a DVD with Confluence, just press the DVD Play button (in the lower left corner). From there you can play or eject the DVD.

You can stick with 10.4.

Ok so the new nightly build has play/eject, in a easy accessible location? excellent. I'll try it today, that should help old people.

#3 - sounds good. I didnt know if 10.5 had any features in the os that helped it run xbmc or any compatibility enhancements.

#4 - haha I was in that thread after searching, keyspan. Glad I found it. I'll go with the ps3 remote as they are $20 and fairly big buttons, along with numbers incase I need to type a IP.

I may add this though before I go on a searching spree. Is there a way to map/script a button on the remote to do a function? Like eject dvd or suspend the pc?
