Replacing ZOTAC IONITX-F-E heatsink
#1
Hi,

I'm currently pricing out a build right now.

I'm planning on throwing the ZOTAC IONITX-F-E inside of the Silverstone Lascala LC05B.

Now the problem I'm having is that in this video (actually made by Zotac) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkuV6RCPIuM

They show that the fan cannot be properly placed on top on the heat sink and instead place it by the memory without securing it.

Talking with Zotac, they recommend that I do have a fan because of the lack of airflow in the case.

So what I'm wondering is if anyone has tried to replace their heatsink with any chipset heatsinks?

What are the distances between holes?

These are some of the heatsinks I'm hoping would work.

Also, which chip produces the most heat (ie if one had to be passive and one active cooled, which would you choose)?

I'm thinking if I throw down some copper, the atom could be passive and make the ION active cooled.

I will be adding an SSD later and I already have 1GBx2 Ballistix lying around.

Thanks guys. I'm really looking forward to using this project to dig into Linux more than I have been with Virtual Box.

I have this exact board running in a pretty flat case. Personally I found I need a fan. I tried running without one (even with the cover off) and it would overheat.

What I did was I put the fan that came with the mobo directly on top of the heat sink upside down. In this way the air blows downwards through the heat sink's channels which keeps it cool enough. I secured it with a paperclip to the HSF.

This sucker get pretty hot, I wouldn't invest a lot of money shooting for passive cooling. The Asus ION board that is similar has a much bigger heat sink and still needs a fan. It might be ION3/4 before we see the ability to go fanless.

Again, just try the upside down thing. My fan has a centimeter of clearance from the top of the case and upside down everything says cool (enough).

I run my fan directly on top of my heat sink. I might have to look into flipping it upside down now that Poofy said it works better

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

Because of the size of the case, the fan will not fit on top of the heat sink. Which is why I am considering other heat sinks.

If you don't mind it being fugly you can do something similar to this :-

I couldn't find a suitable low profile alternate heatsink like the guy above, but I used a larger 12cm low-noise fan on my hack-up job, and that seems to do fine with the standard heatsink.

Since my Revo is attached to the VESA mount on the back of my TV I care very little about it's looks - just that it stays cool and is completely silent :p

Hi guys, I'm glad I've found this thread... I have a Zotac IONITX-L-E (so, a sister of F-E) and I also have a Silverstone case. My case is the SilverStone LC09B-ITV ( Interact-TV Edition) but it has exactly the same dimensions of LC05/LC09.

I've already applied a heatsink mod that you guys may already know. It really helps to decrease around 8C in overal temp. I really recommend this mod once it's very simple to do...

http://www.zotacusa.com/forum/topic/2306...tsink-mod/

I can't run it fanless and what I'm using now is a very quiet 40mm fan (bought on quitepc.com) in the right side of the heatsink (not on top, cause it won't fit.. but at the right side) and it helped a bit but it still running near 70 celcius what is not good...

So I want to join the "team" here in order to find a good fix for this. I think a 50mm fan could fit it (at the same place, in the right side of the heatsink) but I still need to measure it. If it fits, 2 x 50mm fan on the ride side could help.

I got very interested on the pics posted in the #1 post and would like to know if any of you had already measure the distance between holes to see if it will fit or not... I will do it, tough.

Please let me know what you guys that have a case like mine and this zotac board have done to keep the temp down...

Looking forward feedback!

I'm running the IONITX-F-E in the Silverstone LC19 case. This case is very thin, there's no room for a fan on top of the heatsink. I moved the case fan from the back of the case to the side nearest the CPU. I then used some thin cardboard and made some ghetto air guides so that the fan draws the air directly from the CPU heatsink.

I've found that most cases are designed very poorly when it comes to air flow. The manufacturers cut holes everywhere and try to make good airflow by putting in more/bigger fans. All this does is result in a case where most of the air bypasses where you want it to go. The trick to get good cooling with minimal fans is to modify the case to channel the air where you want it. A little bit of tape and thin cardboard/thick paper can work wonders.

Yeah, temp has been always an issue... Well, I'm really interested in the heatsink+cooler (ezothech posted in the 1st post of this thread... If it fits the atom chip, we could just use a passive heatsink for the ION chip (GPU). Does anyone succeed on doing that? The link I'm referring is this one: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.asp...llFullInfo If we could add 2 of those, one for the atom and another for the ION chip then we would fix the temp issue for sure...

Another solution I was thinking is to cut 1cm or 2cm off the top of heatsink so that we could place the 60mm cooler (from Zotac) on top of it. I would take the heatsink to a Weld shop to cut it professionally... If that works, then we could add whatever 60mm cooler (maybe 80mm) on top of it... What do you guys think about this?

Let me know your comments about all this please... Summer is coming here in Brazil and it gest HOT... :-)

Best...

Anyone?

As I've mentioned I bouth 2 50mm fans from quitepc.com... the model I got was this one http://www.quietpc.com/br-pt-gbp/product...ns/50mmfan. However, it's kind of loud... :-( And I couldn't notice a difference if I'm using 1 or 2... Even 1 is a bit loud... 50mm fans is the maximum height we can accommodate in Silverstone LC05 and LC09 cases... and u should put then at the right side of the heatsink once you can't put it on top of heatsink...

Using these fans, I can get temps around 55~64 (it will vary accordingly with the room temperature). However I want a more silent solution...

The 40mm I was using can't get it cool... it easily reaches 80 celcius.. Undecided

So I will stick with the *bit* noisy solution but that cools it down... Undecided I was really looking someone that tried one of the heatsink/fans sets that are in the 1st post of this thread...

Cheers...

Try controlling where the air flows with some cardboard. A channel directly from CPU to fan to exhaust can do wonders for cooling.

Hum... interesting... I will try it out as soon as I can. When I do it, I will post here...

What about if we (Silverstone LC05, LC09) got together to organize a 'project' to create a custom heat pipe / cooling system for that unit? I would pay for it if we could find someone that could do it professionally... You need the proper tools and knowledge to do it.. as per this link:

http://www.silentmods.com/section2/item230/

Who would like to invest some bucks in something like this? Imagine, if we could create a really decent, working cooling system for this Silverstone cases? I LOVE the case... it is really neat/well built... However, it should have a better cooling system... :-(

PM me if you want to create a group for that purpose...

Cheers...
