TV Tuner under $60
#1
We have an XMAS exchange for under $60 might as well get something I need but don't want to spend for myself:

I'm looking for:
1. Nothing fancy, dont need a dual tuner or anything
2. Just want to watch Live TV and skin Live TV for XBMC. I dont care about recording really...
3. Perfer someone knows for sure it works with whatever DVR software out there - Mediaportal/Myth/Tvheadend/etc...

I wish I could weigh in with some good advice, but the whole PVR thing has me stumped for now. I am a HDHomerun man and that (until VERY recently) got left out the whole XBMC PVR thing.

I recently bought this to try and get it to work:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6815116034

But until I try I honestly can't advise it.

Research on the LinuxTV wiki tells me this is the most compatible card:

But again, I don't have one to confirm. Hits your price point though.

I really want to help, I wish I could do more. I am excited about you adding LiveTV functions to your skin!

I just read a post of yours recommending HDHomerun, then googled that. Those seem pretty cool and easy to setup..

What about this ONE?

Either way as long as I know one works with the clients - Mediaportal/Myth/TvHEadend/etc... I'm cool with whatever...

Very very cool. That single tuner model works great. I would be lying if I said it was easy to setup though...

Windows isn't so bad. You just have to mess with mapping channels:

http://www.silicondust.com/support/hdhom...diaportal/

But for Linux (aka TVheadend aka where all the PVR action is on this forum) it requires you to compile its new driver from scratch:

http://www.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9153

Even after you compile the driver you have to hack to get the channels to work. That is why I didn't recommend the HDhomerun right from the get-go.

On the other hand, that PCI card I link to has its drivers built into the kernel:

http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppa...V-HVR-1250

Seems like a safer bet. Soon as I get some money I will buy one just to confirm. I hate not having good recommendations on hand, but the decision to use TVheadend as the primary backend (with no native HDHomerun support) instead of MythTV (which has EXCELLENT HDHomerun support) set me back a few months....

I've been reading up all day, and just have been dying to code up PVR. Since I have near zero Linux knowledge I'll probably go with the safer/easier tv card...THX!

Actually I might just get that soon and ask for something else for that XMAS list...

I have read the problem was that a DVB-S/S2 based HDHR requires extra bandwidth for High Def above and beyond normal DVB-T requirements.

I have the HDHomeRun Network-based Dual Digital and it was a breeze to setup with Windows 7 media center. I think it was essentially plug-and-play. It's great to be able to use it on all of my computers!

I don't know much about the back-ends, but support is in the roadmap for Eden so I'd have to agree with our Resident Hardware Guru (nice job getting that title Wink) that it would be good to hold off on the HDHR for now. Its potential is fantastic though.

I don't want anyone to get me wrong, I love my HDHomerun (I have have dual tuner). It is my second favorite device in my AV arsenal next to the Harmony. I use it everyday to stream local TV to my iPhone. And its potential is still really good for XBMC:

VDR has support. Mediaportal has support. And eventually I assume a MythTV backend will get near what the TVheadend backend is and on that day it will have support as MythTV LOVES the HDHomerun.

But for now, TVheadend support- which is the furthest along PVR backend from what I can tell- depends on compiling the driver and some pain so I don't recommend it.

As it is right now any info on XBMC's PVR branch is a mess, especially if you plan to use it with ATSC. That will change when it is merged with the main branch after Dharma.

What I pretty much plan to do is buy a ton of TV Tuners myself to get a better idea of compatibility for recommendations (the kind of thinking that got my title Smile ), but for now from my research tells me that hauppauge 1250 seems to be the best bet. I will get one soon to make sure...

I have a Hauppauge WinTV PVR 500 MCE. It's a dual tuner but you can get it for around $75 on ebay.

I used it with MythTV for a year or so with no problems. I only stopped using it because we ditched cable...

Before that I used a HVR-1600 with MythTV. No problems with it, but I had upgraded to the dual tuner so I could record one thing while watching another.

I like to know how stories end and Well couldn't wait I went with this one. Hopefully I can get the hang of Linux and PVR, both of which seem difficult, for me atleast...
