[LINUX] Latest Flash 10.2 beta supports Linux VDPAU

Thumbs Up
As per subject, the lastest Adobe Flash 10.2 beta plugin (32bit) now supports VDPAU on Linux.

That means a simple Atom+ION box can now play back 1080p internet flash videos with no stutter and only about 6% cpu load!

Bad news is that it looks like it won't support ION1, which excludes a lot of machines already out there.

Good news is that it will support the GT2xx series and ION2 I bet (while on Windows HD Bitstreaming support is limited to the GT4xx series). So a lot of GeForce G210's will be sold.

In fact, I bought one today to test. Gonna be a good year in 2011 for XBMC...

Wow - that's AWESOME news! The ION really is the killer XBMC platform now IMHO.... no need for anything more for pure media playing....

Any idea if that's doesn't or really a won't?

Hmm, no way to know until someone tests it I guess:

Just to avoid confusion, it's HD audio bitstreaming that currently doesn't work on ION1, VDPAU Flash (the topic of this thread) works great on ION1 too (and in fact on every Nvidia GPU that supports VDPAU).

I have a ION1 system myself and I have tested Flash VDPAU support on it, 1080p youtube videos play perfectly.

Sorry. Didn't mean to confuse you.

So far testing is that it doesn't work with Hulu (that site is the devil I swear) but is does with pretty much everything else. Hopefully Hulu will get fixed and then the only site separating Windows from Linux will be Netflix (as I don't expect to see GPU accelerated Moonlight for a while).

I agree, moonlight support is not coming quickly - if at all. Do you have any insight as to how the Boxee Box supports Netflix? Some proprietary moonlight library licensed from MS?

I would assume Netflix has a private API for accessing their videos with a non-Silverlight player if you're an approved partner. Perhaps the 360 has some sort of Silverlight port, but for the PS3, Wii, Roku, iPhone/iPad, and many Blu-Ray players that have Netflix Instant Watch support, a custom player would be required.

I'm guessing Boxee has been in talks with them to become an approved partner, at the cost of losing the openness of the platform they originally intended (I'm sure that to Netflix, XBMC = Open-source = hacking their platform.)

I haven't tried it since I never come across a site that I'm interested in that requires moonlight, but AFAIK moonlight has been supporting VDPAU for a while already:

The problem with Netflix is not lack of VDPAU support in moonlight but lack of DRM support in moonlight.
