It seems somewhat unlikely that this is related to the ssd or am I naive?

Make sure you have unmuted hdmi in audiomixer and that you have the proper settings.

I know its soooo unrealistic. But if I put in normal HDD install XBMC 10.0 LiveCD again and put the settings:

Audio output: HDMI
Audio output device: hdmi
Passthrough output device: hdmi

It works... Nothing else change or done on the SSD configuration...

How do I check if it is muted or not? I connected thru ssh and run alsamixer... but I did not find a volume for the hdmi (i have master, pcm, front, surround, center, lfe, line mic, mic boost, s/pdif, s/pdif d, s/pdif 1, beep)

SOLUTION FOUND: Run the Audio Mixer thru Programs Unmuted IEC958;1 works now perfectly.
