I've got my atv2 hooked to my ht reciever via optical, now, and I was curious, does xbmc automatically downmix everything to stereo, or, if I set it to 5.1 in the menu, will it output 5.1 (or what ever is encoded?)

XBMC does only automatic downmix to 2.0 when you select Analog audio.

A number of people were having trouble with audio downmixing on certain videos (where background music would play, but voices wouldn't). The 2/27 keith unofficial build has a patch included for this.
