HW decoders decode at what ever the video rez they are given. That is scaled (or not) to the DISPLAY resolution.
Right, I really know the differece between video resolution, display resolution AND gui resolution ;-) However, what I wanted to know is the rendering resolution of HW decoded video. Is it also scaled up to 1080p, as the GUI? I can live with the GUI@
720p, but video decoding is a must.

You are wrong: my eyes, 8 feet away from a 37'' 1080p TV DO notice the difference. I have to say that I first noticed the rendering resolution difference in the GUI so I digged a bit to find out that the scaling was being performed.
kind regards.
