I am planing for a long time on doing this exactly like you (including the elastic bands ). How is the pi performing with the external hd? Have you installed any download client (nzb, torrent) on the pi? If yes, how is that impacting the performance? Is the setup heating up a lot? I was worried that stacking them like that might heat up the pi.
bboo, heat seems fine, theres cooling holes in the Pi Slice case, and there are gaps between the hub/Pi/disk.
Sat and watched Avatar 3D on it and it handled it fine

I like it kind of low, had to take off the feet to slide the receiver in. Other than that I like it and it is crafted well

Okay thanks. It doesnt look to bad for the price. I am kind of on a tight budget right now with paying for everything else so cheap ikea furniture will have do for now.

And an overall after pic (pre-htpc) when I was using my ATV2 for XBMC:
Wow awesome transformation, I like the custom work done. Did you do it yourself?
Yes I did do it all. To be fair though building stuff is more than just a hobby.
There's some really nice setups getting posted in this thread. I like the boblight/ambilight setups. Might have to try that out one day.

Hello, my name is Jon, and I am an alcoholic.
No wait, this was the wrong speech. I am a mediaholic.
Oh well, I am one of the main testers of OpenELEC, and this is my humble setup which just had a recent upgrade.
My main device is an Asus EEE Box EB1501P. Which is pretty much the perfect box for XBMC and streaming media over the network.
The rest is as follows:
TV: Samsung ES7005 55" LED TV
Receiver: Denon AVR3313
Power Amplifier (for the front speakers): NAD C275BEE
Bluray player: NAD T567
Front speakers: B&W DM683
Center speaker: B&W HTM61
Surround speakers: B&W 686
Remote: Logitech Harmony Touch
For people who want a light htpc for just xbmc, you should really check out OpenELEC
