Post your setup pictures: the Next Generation
Here is our 7.1 setup. The main speakers are hidden behind the "wall" which consists of a frame with a screen; the rest is covered with speaker cloth. The skin is Transparency! We use a Panasonic PT-AE2000 projector, Denon AVR4308, Oppo BDP-83, Technisat Digicorder, PS3, and Mac Mini for XBMC. Music and such is stored on a LAN server (Synology 411+ 16Tb) in a different room. This is all behind our backs and controlled using a Harmony 900 with RF support (soon to be replaced by iPhone WiFi control, but I haven't quite decided yet which. I am wavering between iRule, Roomie or even RedEye. Any advice would be welcome).

PS. The monitor is normally switched off and is only used when listening to music (quiet) or tinkering with the system. It also serves as an emergency backup should the projector fail or needs a lamp change (once every two years or so).
Oh, what I wouldn't give for Kompiler's theatre couch (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1312873)! Very nice.
Nothing special- here are my 7.2 and 3.1 home theater systems.......

whats the point of the second little screen if I may ask ?
Probably to be able to do stuff with the HTPC without switching projector on, like listening to music.

Indeed, not to mention tinkering with the system, but music is most important because the projector noise detracts a little (it is quiet but not that quiet). I have now moved one of the Sonos boxes to the media room as well so I do not even have to switch any screens on when listening to music.

Do you run two instances of XBMC or is it server based?
It's a major pain in the ass to wait for the projector to warm up before you can start listening to music, and then listen the humming noise coming from the projector. Not to mention expensive bulbs.

Quite, although the replacement bulbs for the Panasonic are less than a quarter of what we used to pay for them and so far they are fine. What I appreciate hugely about XBMC when listening to music (I don't always switch everything off) is that the screen is dimmed and that makes it a lot less obtrusive. Gapless playing is also a great boon (but the Sonos handles that flawlessly as well).

Thanks!

Thanks!

Well, I got it in the Netherlands, at a store that has since gone bankrupt. It's a sideboard that was called 'Arad'.

But these guys seem to have a lot of similar stuff the first store used to have, just not the exact one I have...

Just finished my setup with Dharma XBMCbuntu, all my movies and TV are hand-ripped from DVD by copying with AnyDVD and then ripping to MKV with handbrake to preserve English subtitles (for when the baby is sleeping) and stored on the NAS

Both machines use the NAS for MySQL database syncing as well as profiles (one for my wife and I, one for the kids)

We live in an apartment with concrete walls so running and hiding cables is pretty hard- as well as poor wifi transmission, thus the powerline ethernet which works pretty well. The projector also serves to make the living room not look movie-centric when not in use.

Total cost of all of this is probably about $2,000USD over 4 years - but we didn't have to buy the TV b/c it's the landlord's. The biggest cost was the NAS and drives, before that we had MySQL installed on one of the machines and shared to the other.

Living Room

Viewsonic PJ551D
Zotac Z-Box w/ OCZ 64G SSD
TP-Link Powerline Ethernet (100Mbps)
Aigo 7" Android tablet w/ Official XBMC Remote
Nintendo Wii
2.1 speakers

Lights on: the living room is pretty small and we didn't want TV to be the focal point.
Image

Lights off: but when it's on, there's no missing it. I'm not sure of the exact throw size, but it's as wide as a 3-cushion sofa.
I picked the projector up on clearance at fry's for $300 in 2009 as we were moving to China, it's been a great investment.
The resolution is 1024x768, which is about the minimum you need for XBMC to look good, but since all my content is SD I don't need an HD projector.

Cabling from projector to cabinet, concrete walls require external routing.

A small cabinet where everything is stored, including DVDs I have yet to rip.

Changhong 37" 1080p HDTV
Lenovo Q110
TP-Link Powerline Ethernet (100Mbps)

The cover is just a piece of cardboard covered in duct tape and sprayed black, but it looks decent
The TV is the landlord's.

some more custom duct tape work over the PC and TV power LEDs...

Office

QNAP TS412 w/ 4x 3TB WD Red drives
D-Link 300Mbps Wireless N router
4mbps China Unicom fiber connection

The wife's office, she likes it messy...

Hi there m0gwai! First of all congratulations on your most exquisite and finest setup.

I have to tell you I want the same! Could you please share technical aspects of your setup? I am particularly interested in 2.35 aspect ratio, great for films shot in that ratio indeed like the old japanese movies. What projector are you using? Can it be switched to other proportions in order to accommodate subtitles for instance, and to other sizes easily at the press of a button? What projections screen are you using, what reflective material? Does it roll up or is it a one-piece panel mounted on the wall? Perhaps you aren't using a screen but the wall itself painted with a reflective layer?

Thanks in advance. Best, CF
