Hey Immortal,

When you have a chance, can you see if this installer works on windows 8.1?

thanks,

Uninstalled the previous version, made sure the old folder was gone for Program Files, installed new version. Worked Beautifully!

Installed the new server and client yesterday. Live TV seems to be working much better on my main HTPC and Laptop. No stutter on HD and the channel changing seems to be a little faster,

Still not having much luck with the Raspbmc build from the first message. I don't see the add-on in the last of PVR clients and I updated to the last nightly build and updated the firmware as outlined here... http://forum.stmlabs.com/showthread.php?tid=10508
I'm not very good with the Pi yet and it could be something on my end. I'll keep working on it.

Thanks again krustyreturns!!!! Looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this setup.

Did you install the pm-xbmc-rbp-20130908 buildHuh You have to scroll to the last of 6 pages to get to it, it's the only build that has wmc-pvr in it. After reboot you should see Windows Media center pvr listed in add ons>disabled add-ons>pvr clients
If I have been of help, please add to my reputation as a way of saying thanks, it's free.
I am playing around with the guide in XBMC. Is there a way to filter out channels that I do not subscribe to? When I was using NextPVR the EPG did this automatically.

In WMC guide view right click on the channel name/listing then select disable. Or in WMC got to settings>tv>guide>edit channels and deselect the ones you don't want to see

Without addons and other configurations, I don't think any pvr backend can be scheduled to only record new episodes. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Argus TV (which I used with MediaPortal) has the most advanced scheduling of any PVR that i've seen, more advanced and flexible than WMC (and WMC is very good).
I used MP's own TV server before switching to Argus, and I cant remember it being limited just to time slots. It's a long time since I've used it, so maybe it is, but I'm skeptical. If that's the way it's working for you, maybe it's a limitation of how you're collecting EPG data.
With EPG data, all PVR's should be able to manage recordings based on program names, episode numbers, etc.

MeMeMe, that's just it, with mediaportal on the xbmc side, episode numbers aren't populated, unless you can teach me something I don't know.
Even with the wmc_server backend, I'm not getting episode names or numbers populated in xbmc program guide.

Is there something you can help me learn?

I found the same thing with refocus. I had my daughter try it (my wife is too difficult a test), and she took to it right away. It would be interesting if someone really attempted to make a wmc skin (not sure I would use it though).

Good. Thanks for the info, and your patience - I would have never predicted that win 8.1 would have new wmc dlls.

My wife, and the fact that my daughters always side with her (the nerds in our house - my son and me - are out numbered).

I gave up on wmc when it appeared Microsoft was leaving us diehard out in the cold, no real updates, no changes as well as everything you had to go through during setup to get the different formats of movies to play.
But with WMC as a backend, lifes good. Smile

It's a shame really, because WMC had a lot of potential and it was a cutting edge UI (at the time). The interesting thing is that they seem to be re-entering the TV game with the XBox One. Should be interesting.

I just ordered an HDHomerun Prime. I will probably try it with ArgusTV first, but I may switch everything over to Win7 and use MCE soon. It would be nice to save a few bucks on the guide data, and I've become a little disillusioned with the Windows 2012 UI. Call me old-school, but I prefer the Start Menu!
Yes, Microsoft was ahead of the game with MCE, but in my opinion they dropped the ball when they failed to give it major attention. If they'd been smart, Windows could the primary HTPC now, with MCE as the main focus, addons and a partnership with the major broadcast and cable stations, imagine. (Although this product would have cost a ridiculous amount)

As far as the no start menu, I think that's a joke. That should have been a separate OS for touch screen (I think that was the idea but touch screen PC's aren't as popular as everyone thought

I wouldn't be surprised if the XBox One plans are the reason they abandoned WMC development. These plans will have been under development for years, so they knew it was coming and maybe (reasonably) saw the Xbox One as being more likely to be used in big numbers next to a TV than a PC is. Home Theatre PCs are still a niche market, sadly.

Think about this, maybe MCE was just a test version to see the interest. Now with Xbox it sales better than the Windows OS, so why not move the media software to the xbox. Yes, should be interesting.
Think about the income Microsoft could have with a media center on the xbox, they could sale music, sale/rent games and movies. Microssoft need something big, maybe media center to the xbox is it. Kids will purchase movies, games and music, especially if they don't have to leave their gaming seat to do it. Smile

I have no experience with XBMC;s PVR, but I understand it lacks quite a few features that the backends do have (series recording for instance). If you use mediaportal's server, and mediaportal as a client, you should be able to do series recordings and avoid getting repeats.

I think (can't be 100% sure) the failings you are seeing are because XBMC's PVR support isn't mature yet.

That said, the way EPG is populated can also play a part. Sometimes EPG data can be flaky - even on WMC, episodes usually lack numbers, sometimes lack a title. But they are always flagged as a repeat if they are repeated.

Using any decent PVR though you should be able to do this: set a series recording, which sets the PVR to record all programs of that name, and then further define "only this channel" or "All channels", and "new episodes only" or "all episodes". Then, if a program broadcast time changes, and the EPG is updated to reflect it, the recording time slot will be adjusted to account for it.

WMC and Argus - the two I'm most familiar with - can do better than that baseline, but not through XBMC: you have to use their own clients to get the full benefit. Argus, btw, has a nice client designed to be run on its own to set and manage recording schedules.

Hopefully the version of XBMC after Frodo will bring XBMC up to speed with other PVRs.

Edit: Though i wouldn't hold your breath. I just read this disappointing statement from one of the XBMC devs here

Which means it's likely to be over a year before XBMC gets such a very basic PVR feature.
I have a feature request. Can you add the ability to use WMC channel categories in XBMC?
