[SOLVED] Getting movies back again after "Remove From Library"?
#1
Question
Hi All, (first time poster - please let me know if I'm getting anything wrong)

Using Frodo 12.3 on Windows 7 (previously 12.1). No plugins or customization of note.

Problem: Some movies aren't appearing in our library which used to. I can only assume that this is because my file server was offline, my 5-year-old clicked the movie she wanted to watch, XBMC said something to the effect of "This movie isn't accessible. Would you like to remove it from the Library?" and she clicked [Yes] and move on to the next one... My problem is that XBMC now knows never to show that movie again and we want it (all of them) back.

If I rename the file slightly on the server - like putting "test" on the end of the file name for example, that new file will appear in the library, (but I like my file naming and would prefer not to rename everything simply to work around the problem). I've tried the following:
  • "Clean library..."
  • Remove the source, including all library information, then add it again and re-scan.
  • Install latest version (12.3 - was previously on 12.1), and clean/rescan..

The file is removed from the file list as well, so there's no way I can do anything with it specifically from XBMC any more.

Please help!

You could try a bulk rename utility here, select all affected folders and add a space or something into it then do a rescan? Not ideal i know but all i can think of.

Yes it was removed from library, and if you answered yes from next prompt delete file you want to answer NO (Educate your Daughter not to press YES, its better to press NO) Since server may be offline and she may not understand whats involved.

@MilkZ suggestion is a bit of a hammer solution, last resort measure if anything.

You need to do this

Read Video_library/Setting_content_and_scanning#Scanning_and_updating_files (wiki)

Start from step 6 on and look at step 7 refresh source. However do

Refresh by source/folder

1) Remove a source/folder from the library by changing the content setting to "None".
2) When XBMC asks you if you want to remove those items from the library, say YES. If you say NO it will duplicate existing entries on rescan.
3) XBMC will then show a progress bar and remove those entries.
4) Edit source Change the content setting back to what it was before Movies tvshow etc.
5) When XBMC asks if you would like to refresh entries in that source say YES and will then rescan in those entries.

Assuming all it is is removed from library, rather than deleted from disk, then simply navigating to the file via Video->Files and going to Movie Information will get it back in the library.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.

@MilkZ, yeah I was thinking I could probably just rename the source folder from "Kinds Movies" to "Kids Movies 2" to achieve the same effect, but I really don't want to rename my media folders just to avoid some information XBMC has cached for a particular file in a particular path...

@jmarshall, the file is still on disk, along with all the other movies that are showing up, but even in the Video->Files view this particular file isn't showing in XBMC. (nb: I keep referring to it as if it's just one file, but there are about half a dozen that it's doing this for).

@uNiversal, thanks for the great link! Unfortunately it doesn't work as advertised :-( Here's some details:
1) I edited the movie source and changed the content type to "None".
2) When asked if I wanted to remove this source's information from the Library I selected "Yes" and it did the progress bar thing for a minute or so.
3) I changed the content type back to "Movies"
4) When asked if I wanted to update the library I selected "Yes".
5) One of the movies I'm missing is "Despicable Me" - I watched the little progress bar along the top of the screen updating the library, and just like all the other files "Despicable Me (2010).avi" appeared (indicating that it was looking at the file in question), then the name changed to "Despicable Me (2010)" (indicating that it had linked that file name with the correct information it had found on the internet), then it carried on to the next one as usual...
6) I went into Movies and it wasn't there, and still not there in the Videos->Files view.

It's like XBMC has scanned it into the Library but it's stored a flag somewhere saying not to display it in any list in the application?!? Confused

Probably You set Hide Watched located in sidebar Video_navigation (wiki)

Oh my God you're right!

Thank you soooooooooo much! That never occurred to me, and I would never have expected it to retain that flag even in Videos->Files view and after the source had been removed from the database and re-added again. (so hard to figure out what the kids have randomly clicked on some times)...

Thanks again, and Merry Christmas!

Hello, don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have a similar issue, I hope the fix is as simple as the op's.. Using Gotham alpha 10. A few days ago, I manually deleted a movie folder (crappy avi version) but didn't run clean library afterward. Days later i had a (better mkv version) which i watched and it was all good. Then I noticed both movies were still in the library, I ran clean library but it deleted both... But the mkv version is still on the disc and only shows up when I do as described above Video->Files. Unfortunately the movie information option is not there at all in Alpha 10 so that didn't work for me. I tried rename, update, clean and nothing is working. I'm hoping to stay away from re-scanning the whole library because it's been having issues acquiring the poster art recently (been hoping that will fix itself) Smile
On a side note...
any idea if clean library will ever have the option of removing the entire movie folder not just the movie? It'd be great to manage as much of the library as possible from XBMC itself.

thanks in advance

Delete the files physically from the source, via ftp/sftp/ssh or whatever, clean the library done.

I deleted the file, ran clean library then update and still no show. My laptop runs Frodo 12.2 and it shows there via smb library update.

You trying to remove files from library and source do what I said, once the files are deleted from source they are gone.
However if you haven't deleted the files form source and want to rescrape just goto Video>files set content on source properly where these files are and bring up context menu and select Scan for new content.
Alternatively navigate to files that are mising via VIDEO> FILES>YOUR SOURCE and when you see the file click "i" on keyboard or "i" on remote and click refresh, that should also get your files back to library.

I deleted the file then put it back and it did not work. I noticed that the library is not updating so that's probably the reason it's not there. The problem might be a little more complex Confused so let give you some more info.
Gotham Alpha11
Win7 Ultimate 64
Debug log
upgraded to Alpha 11 last week and it was working fine until I did what I described in my first post. I just created a test folder on the hard drive and it shows in Video->Files but not the library. I'm very hesitant to re-scan the entire library 1) because it's been having trouble getting the poster art and 2) now I don't know if it will update as it should. Jeez... I was really hoping this would be something really simple.

I just tried adding a new source and it scraped and updated into the library just fine...

Currupt databases will do that too I go back to you and say read post#2 http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1582558 and follow it. But say No on step 2 and see how that turns out.

Best make a backup of current databases before hand.

ok.. I see, by saying NO on step 2 it will keep the current db as is and i won't lose everything, correct?
