i'm considering an android device as well. What seems to be the best one right now? I know the PIVIOS came highly recommended way back. Is this still the best device to go with or have others hit the market since that outperform the PIVIOS?

Get a G-box Midnight MX2 clone for $60-70 and install Linux XBMC on it. That's what I've been using for the past month and it's been terrific.
The Odroid-U3 someone linked earlier looks like something to watch out for.

Now I think Vidon.me Av200 is the best android box for play video file by xbmc. Its can play iso blray/3d with hd-audio.

I have a k-r42...it is a rk3188 device and as soon as they get the gotham alpha builds mediacodec and libstagefright stable they will be one of the best for the money. ~75.00 and it is a quad core with 2gb memory box. Right now they run everything great but you have to turn off mediacodec sometimes and turn it back on depending on the show codec.

It has WiFi or Ethernet and oddly enough wireless is stronger than wired. Right now I'm 35ms ping 40mb download and 17mb upload via wireless which is comparable to any other device in my home
Tested with speedtest.net app
