Cool I had 2 successful tests !

and also some failure, but I need to check if it's not related to the resume movie playback feature. I mean : the two failure I encountered vanish if I skip the video to the next chapter (or back to the previous). I need to do more tests.

Congrats ! It seems you found it. Very impressive.

Olivier.

I can confirm that it works most of the time but it's not consistent.

I often have the choppy video playback when resuming a movie. Sometime it disappear after skipping a chapter or two... sometimes not.

It is like if kodi had issue feeding the cache with video (my video files are on a SMB share) then the choppy video playback occurs. After going backwards or forward (skip a chapter) then it finally works consistently.

I also tested to search in a video using fastforward (x4, x8...) :
- if the state of kodi is : choppy video playback mode ON then going fastforward or backward does not change anything.
- if the state of kodi is : choppy video playback mode OFF then going fastforward or backward does degrade the situation and the playback is fine.

When choppy video occurs (90% of time after resuming a movie playback) it is very difficult to fallback to a stable situation. I had to go back and forth in the current chapter many times before getting a stable video playback.

I hope I'm clear enough...

And by the way : thanks a lot for your time trying to solve this issue !

Last two test builds did not work for me. This is on a mid-2011 Mac mini with Intel HD 3000.

Debug log for the latest test build.

Relevant settings as follows:

- Adjust Display Refresh Rate : Always
- Sync Playback to Display : On
- Render Method : Auto detect
- Allow hardware Acceleration - VTB decoder : On

Previously when I had tested this (with the regular beta releases), turning off any one of the following would cease the stuttering: Adjust Display Refresh Rate; Sync Playback to Display; or Allow Hardware Acceleration.

Now, the only thing that gets me back to smooth playback is disabling "Adjust Display Refresh Rate".

With Adjust Display Refresh Rate enabled, the debug overlay still thinks the display is @ 60Hz and it shows Kodi dropping frames.

Definite progress. It now correctly shows that the display is 24Hz and is keeping things in sync. However, it's still dropping frames. I end up with ~15FPS.

Debug log here.

If you need me to check with any particular settings, just let me know.

I think the main problem is fixed now.

It does appear that the primary issue (Kodi not detecting the refresh rate change correctly) has been addressed.

I'm assuming the dropped frames are a different issue, right?

i am about to provide another (hopefully final) testbuild in an hour or so.

Please test and report back:

No luck for me with any of the test builds. All builds are nowhere near watchable for HD with the VTB option selected and any combination of video settings used with it. SD media is not a problem nor is window mode even when the image is filling the entire screen [with the exception of the small window frame at top of screen]. I don't seem to have excessively high cpu usage when not using the VTB option which I know is different to some others, and the video performance is acceptable.

Specs are:

Mac Mini mid 2010
NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
OS 10.11.6
Tested with both default OS Video driver and NVIDA Web Driver

Happy to keep trying new builds if it helps.

This one is working for me. The only issue I can see is that with any overlays up (skin overlays, debug overlay, etc), it drops frames (the video is choppy).

With the debug overlay up, it's showing VsyncOff to be around 30-34 with frames dropping, so it's hard to verify if playback is perfect.. but without any overlays up, it at least appeared smooth.

Hi.

I’ve just changed my iMac for a 2016 MacBook Pro (13”, Touch Bar, 2,9 GHz, 16GB, Sierra 10.12.2) and can’t manage to have the settings ‘Adjust display refresh rate’ and ‘Sync playback to display’ working. When I try to set them as I did on my iMac (‘On start/stop’ and [checked]), the video playback is choppy.

The files I am trying to play are 23.976fps, 24fps and 25fps MKVs, hosted on an external hard-drive.

I’ve tried both with Jarvis and Krypton, with same results.

The mac is plugged with HDMI into an LG 4K TV through a Kensigton USB-C dock. I’ve tried with Apple’s USB-C to HDMI adapter, with same results.

Here are the log files of the playback of a 23.976 MKV with Jarvis:

Without ‘Adjust display refresh rate’ and ‘Sync playback to display’: http://pastebin.com/Jjr04Z78

With ‘Adjust display refresh rate: on start/stop’ and ‘Sync playback to display: [checked]’: http://pastebin.com/m1hmBkPf

Search next time http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=281517

I had.
Didn't see much relation between “Mac Mini Mid 2011” and “MacBook Pro 2016”, neither between “v17.0-ALPHA3” and “current release v16.1 Jarvis”, so perhaps this thread should be renamed.

Anyway, I'll test the builds proposed here and report back.

I can confirm that with this build the playback problems are gone with enabled hardware acceleration!

Intel Iris 1536 MB
macOS Sierra (10.12.2)

Adjust display refresh rate : on start/stop;
Sync playback to display : checked.

• Choppy with AND without hardware acceleration on MacBook Pro 2016 Sierra 10.12.2 (same with official Krypton RC and Jarvis).

• Smooth on iMac mid-2010 El Capitan 10.11.6 even with hardware acceleration (same with official Krypton RC and Jarvis).
