Android Auto frame-rate switching is broken in the latest nightlies

A question to the Kodi team. why was this feature added?

Thanks  Smile

Read the message I quoted.
I'm fine with that, and familiar with the idea and reasons behind it, but most users won't be. They won't have a clue what 'whitelist' is.
If default res and relative framerates are whitelisted by default (and maybe higher res/framerates as well) you simulate the old behavior, while still giving the chance to users knowing what they're doing to take advantage of the feature.

I'm not a "member of Kodi team" but I try to explain.

With the new Whitelist option you are free to decide what resolutions/refresh rates Kodi can switch to and in that way you can decide if the upscaling is made from Kodi (software) or from you TV.
Take that example:

Kodi setted to 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz
Movie at 1920x1080 @ 24 fps

If you Whitelist "1920x1080 @ 24 Hz" Kodi will go to switch to 1920x1080 at 24 Hz and in that way the upscaling from 1920x1080 to 3840x2160 is made from your TV (beacuse the signal to the TV is at 1920x1080).
Instead if you not Whitelist "1920x1080 @ 24 Hz" the movie will be played at 3840x2160 and in that way the upscaling is made from Kodi.
On my side for example, the upscaling made by my main TV is better (better quality) that one made by Kodi, so I prefer to switch resolution in order to let upscale from the TV.

Contrariwise, the upscaling made my secondary TV (a very entry level TV) is poor, so for that TV I prefer the Kodi upscaling instead using the upscaling made by TV.

Yes, your it's a point of view that I can agree.
I hope that the time will increase knowledge of Kodi for the Kodi users.

Thank you. I now understand the reasoning for adding this feature.
e.g: Whitelist "1920x1080 @ 24 Hz" my LG 65B7 OLED tv will upscale from 1920x1080 to 3840x2160 Smile

Would it not be easier to interrogate the EDID of a connected display and register a set of "Valid Display Modes" to automate the process ?
Or did that involve to much individual hardware platform support ?

It's what I did with AMLogic LibreELEC Kodi. (based on your own PR)
I'm using such resolution auto downswitching for Krypton. Limited it to 4K <<-->> 1080p or 720p with a Kodi user selectable option for those OTA TV users when channel switching between 720i and 1080i.

PR it and we can discuss it.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I didn't know about the whitelist feature. After highlighting my whitelist auto frame-rate switching is now working.
I did have an issue. with my Denon AVR 7200WA amp, i/p scaler enabled but when I disabled it. Everything is working great  Smile
i/p scaler enabled

I've just discovered my TV does not upscale with the new whitelist feature.

If the signal that you sent to TV is 1080p and you have Whitelisted 1080p is correct to see on the TV 1080p with Kodi 18.

The TV upscaling is embedded and you will never see 2160p...
You will always and anyway see the signal sent to TV and never if the TV is upscaling or not. The "conversion" from 1080p to 2160p will be never seen if you go to see the info of the signal given to TV (HDMI in your case).

The TV upscales by default otherwise you will see the video not in full screen.

Thanks for the reply.
I’m still a bit confused .Is kodi 17 upscaling(2160p), shown in the second image?

I don’t use the Denon i/p scaler but as you can see from my previous post when it’s enable the image is pink.
There must be a bug within kodi 18 causing this.

Because v17 doesn't allow your TV to do the upscaling, your device (Shield TV) is doing the upscaling.  Your TV is only reporting the resolution that it is receiving.  With v18 you can send 1080 for 1080 and allow your TV to do the upscaling.

So for v17 everything was upscaled to 4K if you had that set as your resolution on your device.  With v18 + whitelist Kodi will send the true resolution and allow your TV to do the upscaling.

Ok, I now understand Smile

Two more questions:
1) If the whitelist is deselected should it work like Kodi 17(everything upscaled to 4K plus Auto-frame switching)
2) What about the Denon i/p scaler pink image issue, is it a Kodi bug

Thanks
