How goes progress, I believe the Pi4 4k isn't working great with 265 yet?

No Pi 4 nightly builds yet. You’ll have to wait!

I don't have one, I was just curious if the build for the Pi4 would be the same as the Pi2/3 in the end, or it's own special thinbg.
RPi4 is a separate and distinct build at this time (for the official LibreELEC 9.2/Kodi 18.x release), mainly to simplify the addition of support for the new RPi4 software platform with Kodi 18.x and gbm/mmal, and this separation may continue with LibreELEC 10 or - once all RPi models move to the future gbm/v4l2 software platform with Kodi 19 in LE10 - it may be possible to fold RPi4 into RPi2. Then again there may be other advantages to keeping RPi4 as a separate build - we did try to create an RPi4 version optimised for Cortex-A72 but hit a show-stopper bug in gdb so it's only Cortex-A53 optimised for now. And then of course there's the possibility of a 64-bit kernel build, support for which on RPi is making good progress (albeit still unofficially).

Is it true we need to wait for official Linux 5.1 or 5.2 for true HDR support?

I forget what I read, but it sounded like many things need to be fixed in Linux before libre elec can truly support the pi4 properly?

5.3 for HDR with Intel/AMD (although the full stack - mesa, ffmpeg, drivers, kodi etc. - will need tweaking). And when I say "Intel" I generally mean only their latest hardware, ie. Gemini Lake/Ice Lake.

For RPi4, the HDR support needs to be added and there's currently not yet a time frame for that as other more basic and essential (ie. Raspbian-type) issues are being addressed first by the Raspberry Pi Foundation developers.

The idea is to move ARM devices supported by Kodi - that is all RPi devices, including RPi4, plus Allwinner, Rockchip, Amlogic, NXP/iMX, Qualcomm etc. etc. - to a common GBM/V4L2 vendor-neutral software platform for Kodi 19, which should make HDR easier to support across the board. Once progress is made towards GBM/V4L2 then you'll start seeing RPi4 builds in this thread, but until then the best option is the official LibreELEC 9.2 RPi4 builds (based on GBM/MMAL and Kodi 18.3).

Builds since build #0815 always seem to make my rpi3 boot into safe mode. Any idea why this could be? My guess is some kind of incompatibility with the latest kernel, although my kodi install is almost completely stock Sad

No idea, could be gcc-9.2.0 related, but safe mode allows you to upload the crash log from the LE Settings add-on so try that and post the link.

If you were to speculate a very approximate timeframe, what would you say that is? 6/12/18 months?
Thanks for the detailed response, appreciate.
Ok, I try it again.
I'd like to play music FROM my Android Smartphone via Bluetooth TO the HDMI-Output of Libreelec on an Rpi3, running the latest milhouse-build.
This guide
https://wiki.libreelec.tv/pulseaudio
didn't work out. It says it is running, but I don't hear any output.

Thank you!
