This is almost always because the correct video driver isn't installed. We need to see a debug log to be sure of this. To open the debug log press Windows-R and in the Run dialog type:

"%appdata%\xbmc\xbmc.log"

(including the quotes). Click OK and the log should open in Notepad. Copy and paste the log into pastebin.com and post the link it gives you here.

Yesterday I had the same problem and I found that the problem is jdownloader. When this application is open I cannot use XBMC. I closed jdownloader and the problem was solved.

I have the same problem which now realize that it is because it can not read the video card. I have been waiting for certain options to be available before I would donate money, and now this problem that should not even exist if win7 doesn't have a problem with the video card certainly makes me not want to donate.

XBMC is reliant upon the facilities provided by the video driver, and since we don't write the video drivers there is very little we can do about it. The only way we could add support for obsolete video cards is to divert effort away from adding new features to XBMC. That might suit you, but it wouldn't suit everyone else.

From your log:

Code:
NOTICE: Found screen: Generic PnP Monitor on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, adapter 0.

XBMC will not work with the default Windows video driver. I'd be surprised if you can get it to run in Parallels, though it would be worth asking in the OSX forum http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=56

I'm trying to set up xbmc in a virtualized environment (microsoft virutal pc, windows 7) and get this error (topic title) when i try to run xbmc. I've pasted the contents of the log file here:

http://pastebin.com/JFurT8Gh

Is there anything that can be done about it, or is xbmc simply not possible in a virtual version of windows?

The emulated video card isn't suitable. The drivers for it don't provide the DirectX support XBMC needs.

@GoldDust: You haven't installed the proper video driver. Windows is using the default "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" driver.
