Moving XBMC Live to Ubuntu/XUbuntu and Autostart

Hi all. I've been running XBMC Live installed to a hard disk for some months. Now I'd like to add some extra bits to my HTPC set up like Wine/Steam and Internet Browsing. I have a few questions someone might be able to answer.
Is there a big difference in boot time between Live and a Desktop Linux with XBMC set to autostart?
Is there a lot of configuration required to get the Splash screen, autostart etc. set up so the install behaves like Live.
Ideally I'd like to load XBMC without a Desktop by default but allow me to optionally login to a desktop to launch Firefox, Wine or Transmission or something.
If that's difficult I could exit XBMC to a desktop but I suspect having the Desktop preloaded would lengthen the boot time.

Lastly I hear XFCE is a lightweight desktop but Unity makes a good ten foot interface. Anyone any thoughts?
