HDMI Audio output on HD6570
#1
Hi there

I've recently put together a new Windows-based HTPC build:

System specs:

i3 2100
GA-H67MA-USB3-B3
HD 6570
8GB RAM
Logitech Z-5500 Speakers
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

I've been struggling like mad to get multi-channel audio output over the 6570's HDMI port.

In Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback Devices my ATI HDMI Output is listed as only supporting 2 channel sound, and no encoded formats (no option for DTS, Dolby Digital, etc.). And of course when I try and play a 5.1 MKV or whatever with XBMC, I get the "failed to initialise" error (although stereo is fine).

I've got 5.1 over HDMI working on Windows machines with Nvidia cards, and also works like a charm on my Macbook Pro. The mobo optical output works fine as well.

Looking around for an answer, I've tried installing multiple versions and combinations of various ATI CCC drivers and Realtek audio drivers (both the full suite and just the Realtek HDMI driver) to no success. I've also tried enabling and disabling on-board audio and graphics, and reinstalling Windows, also to no avail.

Many people also suggest going to a "Custom" tab in the HDMI device settings and enabling some checkbox, but that Custom tab just doesn't exist for me, regardless of driver or version.

Any ideas? I can't believe how painful this is on a relatively decent AMD card. Anybody got it working on a 6570 or 6450? Really want to eliminate the optical cable from my setup.

Thanks

What are you trying to push the audio to, an audio receiver of some sort I'm guessing? I had the same problems that you did and got it fixed. I just left the audio to 2.0 in the settings screen. Made sure the output device was my AMD HDMI source and it would send the entire 5.1 stream to the receiver for it to decode. Also make sure that you check DTS compatible receiver and the other option AC3 I think? Every time I tried to set it to 5.1, it wouldn't work. I left it at 2.0 and it started working. I also in my tearing out my hair stage went in a configured Windows Media Center as 5.1 before I figured all this out. I REALLY don't think that it helped, but if you get your setup like mine and it still doesn't work, then give it a shot. Also keep all other audio devices disabled in the bios and make sure the HDMI is the default device in your Windows settings.

If you've got recent drivers, which it sounds like you do, I'd guess this is due to the info the driver receives during HDMI hand-shaking. If you're connected to a receiver the receiver should be reporting what modes it supports, and they should be available to the GPU.

That said, even with my receiver off I get the various supported devices showing up in my Windows sound properties dialogs.

Can you tell us what your current driver/version is?
