SYSTEM -> APPEARANCE -> SKIN (then over to SETTINGS in the right hand column) -> BACKGROUND OPTIONS
enable the option that says "Hide Fanart in full screen visualization" That will disable the background while AS is running but still show you the background image in things like the artist list.
