It's nothing to do with overclocking.
I have just reformatted the ext4 partition, removed the config.txt file - so to be clear, there is no longer a config.txt file present in the primary partition - and booted XBMC, which came up with a resolution of 640x480.
I have seen image corruptions with overclocking. So don't tell me overclocking doesn't belong to image corruptions. Overclocking must not but can lead to that.
