I'm not interested in Subtitles as much as I'm interested in getting the output from the various "plugins" (say YouTube, et al) to produce readable results and show "foreign" characters properly.

In passing, I've posed a number of other questions - any further insights ? Why is openelec's arial.ttf SO large yet missing lots of glyphs ?

Sorry I don't have any insights into this. My interest when investigating fonts was for subtitles. I haven't looked further to see if the interface was using them. Perhaps this might help you: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW...o_the_skin

As for the .ttf size -- my guess would be compression (assuming .ttf supports some type of compression) or perhaps it has glyphs you weren't looking at or perhaps multiple variations (bold/italic) that duplicate existing glyphs?
