Is there any way to have 2.1 audio output instead of 2.0 while playing music? My old A/V receiver had a button that set output to 2.1, but that receiver died and the replacement has no such option

I have looked through the wiki, searched the forum, updated my audio drivers, looked through all the settings i could find in windows but my sub remains silent until something explodes in a movie

I am using XBMC Frodo RC3 on windows 7 with audio output via coax using the Realtek audio driver 6.0.1.6299

any help would be greatly appreciated

Most amps do that automatically if you set the crossover frequency (although many are confusing on LFE frequency, not the same)
