Choppy VOB playback halfway through movie
#1
so i just sat down to watch my first full-length ripped dvd via xbmc and halfway through sin city (1 hour into it) it began to chop horribly. the sound cut completely out and the video was down to about 1 frame per second. i hit the jump back button and it played the previously seen part of the movie fine, but then began to chop once again at the same spot. i also could not jump forward in the movie. after trying to resolve it, the xbox ended up freezing.

i restarted it and jumped to the part of the movie where i left off and it played fine for half an hour and did the same thing.

i was streaming the movie over smb via a 100mbit wired network. any thoughts as to why it would suddenly be choppy an hour into the movie? i had no problems up until that point.

i have the 10/13 build of xbmc.

thanks!

i have exactly the same problem. currently using the 13th oct build, but the problem was on  earlier builds and i think only since the new dvd player was used.
#3
how did you play the file? from the .ifo file or from the .vob file? i'm pretty sure vob's are played back with mplayer, and i've had issues exactly like that in the past. i've not had any similar issues using the dvd player to play both .img and .ifo files. enable debug logging, and post the log. be sure to let the movie run thru and past the problem. it may yeild some clues.

funnily enough, about a month ago i had the same problem when playing sin city original dvd from the internal dvd drive. the choppyness started at the beggining of a chapter and continued to the end of the film (started where bruce willis is in the hospital bed). stopping the dvd and starting playback from the same chapter did not solve the problem. (i didn't try restarting xbmc unfortunately)

i tried again a couple of weeks ago with an up to date cvs build and playback was fine (skipped straight to the problem chapter). didn't have time for bug reporting then, will test it properly if you can confirm you're trying with a recent build.

regarding the stuttering i have now had a chance to do some more debugging of the dvd player. please refer to 2 log files on my web space. i am using the 7th nov build.

log files

using the dvd 'clear and present danger' i had some stuttering after about an hour, which eventually disappeared.

case #1 - original dvd ripped with dvd decrypter and streamed to xbox from pc using 100mbit wired connection. all tweaks that gamester suggested have been done. i started the dvd from the cover art icon whilst in 'titleview'

case #2 - played original dvd from xbox dvd drive. i started the dvd from the cover art icon whilst in 'fileview'

below is an extract from the log file streamed from the pc. if you look at the elapsed time from the first line to the line with

'11-11-2005 23:16:52 debug cdvdplayer::processsubdata: got complete spu packet' ,

it is 59 minutes and 56 seconds in both log files. i can confirm that the time when i noticed the stuttering coincided with this line in the log file in both cases.

i also tried the xbox region free default dvd player and this works ok with no stuttering, so i discount a damaged disc.

therefore i conclude:-

- that it is not a network problem.
- to me there seems to be some sort of buffering problem.
- since thericky also has a similar problem, it must be a bug in the new dvd player.

any thoughts. do you want any more testing done in particular?

been that way for more than with just the new dvd player build. had it happen to me for like 6months now, and havent been able to find any fix for it.

some movies i can watch, some i cant. dosent matter if it is .vob, .img or other formats, this is totally random. i have posted in other topic's about this aswell, but never found a fix for it yet.

sadly
#7
further to my post of 12th nov re stuttering of dvd playback, i downloaded the 14th nov build and noticed that stuttering was on the list of fixes. unfortunately the fix has not worked. the stuttering still occurs an hour into the film. please see the 12th nov post for full details.

i am having the exact same problem on various dvds. playing them on the dvd drive, they start to stutter at various points in the movie. the standard dvd player has no problems, only the xbmc one. 14th nov build fix has not cured it either.

still thanks to the devs for the dvd player. Smile

just checked the 21st nov build and the stuttering problem that i mentioned in my post of the 12th is still evident and exactly the same, even though there is a bug fix in the change log for the 14th nov.

any ideas chaps, particularly as others are having the same problem. please refer to detailed post of 12th nov.

cheers

i've been experiencing this same problem.  it always seems to be towards the end of the movie for some reason.  i have yet to install the nov 21 build, but the 7th and 14th both do it.  i have also tried the same files with mplayer and it doesn't have the same problem.

edit: i play my movies using the .ifo file

good to see that i'm not the only one with this problem. since then, i have not tried to watch another movie using xbmc. i'm holding off on my decision to build a media server based on xbmc until this problem gets resolved. right now i'm sticking to games. Wink

hello,
same problem here. i watched "lord of the rings - return of the king" from dvd and the stuttering starts after about 1.5 hours. skipping chapters doesn't change it. when pausing the movie for a view seconds and pressing play to go on, it plays well for a view seconds and the continues stuttering. playing with the original xbox player works.

good luck finding the problem...

same problem. almost all movies i play from the disc hits the stuttering problem after 45mins or an hr. my only recourse is to stop and start the chapter where i stopped. very very frustrating. one more thing...i cannot bring up the dvd movie menu once i stopped. via osd, i tried to hit the dvd title menu and i get blank screen and xbox freezes.

i had to go through all the damn previews before getting the title menu. any help on this matter?

thanks

same problem here. i thought it was from playing movies over the network, but i watched to dvd discs over the weekend and both where stuttering to the point of being unwatchable. ive been searching all over for a solution.

i am havin this problem too :[ and have given up pretty much on backin up to hdd since if it does play it seems to pause for moments and audio sync is then lost and at time it seems as if the box was low on ram or something because some movies would jitter.
