is it somehow possible to use custom icons for the drives/shares set in the xboxmediacenter.xml??

yes this was added about a month ago. placing a folder.jpg in the share's root will likely do it but there might be a way to do it in the xml.
Add yourself to the xbmc forums frappr map!
