I need to have a play around with the settings but just wondered If it was just me or has anyone else found this
I did some sanity checks, and it seems that windows had reset the audio setting for that device to 2 channel. I'm not sure if WASPI cares about that, but at any rate, I just re-corrected it.
Will report back, but have left the below (original post in place fir reference).

I've gotten the same feedback from my wife. Eg playing h264 with 2 channel AAC (mp4 container), with XBMC set to 5.1.
Xbmc is hooked up via HDMI to Yamaha YSP-2200 soundbar, which is then connected to TV. WASPI via the HDMI.
The soundbar does not support AAC natively.
[EDIT] I have provided NON-Debug level log as that's what I currently have. I will try to set debug when I get the tv. Please let me know if this is sufficient though...

PS. This comment from my wife only started with the "optimized" fix... Could be coincidence.
