Linux Custom resolution "window"

Hi everyone!

I've been lurking here for a while, but now I have a question! I've recently bought a second hand Canon SX60 projector which has lovely 1400x1050 LCOS panels (4:3) and I hope to use it as a poor man's Cinemascope (2.4:1) projector. That means my target output resolution is something like 1400x584. Is there any way I can force the active area of XBMC to this resolution, while allowing me to adjust where in the 1400x1050 field it is placed (vertically)? I think I need to feed the projector a full frame signal but I want XBMC to only use the 1400x584 "window" for both the UI and video playback.

Many thanks for any help!

P.S. XBMC is da bomb; everyone I've shown it over the years has been blown away - none of the commercial products I've seen can hold a candle to it.
