Gigabyte BIOS update causes XBMC to hang

I've got a Gigabyte GA-H87M-D3H motherboard and an i3-4330 running the onboard HD4600 graphics in Windows 7x64. There's a bug in Haswell that causes audio to be lost from HDMI until rebooting with TV/AVR turned on, and apparently it can only be fixed by updating your BIOS. My MB shipped with the F4 BIOS and the latest BIOS is F6 (which doesn't fix the HDMI problem). What it does do is cause XBMC (12.3) to hang on startup. There was nothing in the extended log that pointed towards anything bad, but it would never clear the logo screen. I reverted back to the F4 BIOS and rebooted and XBMC was instantly working again. No idea what's going on, but I figured I ought to post the problem (and current solution) here so that nobody else runs into this. I never would have known what was going on if I'd updated the BIOS as soon as I built the computer.
