XBMC->TV-AVR no 5.1 available
#1
Hullo,

I've set xbmc up the following way: XBMC running on a raspberry pi, connected via HDMI to my Samsung TV, which in turn is connected via HDMI (ARC) to my AV-Receiver (Denon x1000). Playing 5.1 sources on my TV (i.e. Netflix) works well and prompts my AVR to recognize it as DTS or DD.

5.1 sources on my Raspberry don't work. I've set XBMC to use HDMI as audio out, and If I check my tvs audio settings it receives audio from the rp as PCM (and not DD or DTS therefore doesn't pass it through to my avr as 5.1).

I checked tvservice -a/n and it recognized the device as SAM-SAMSUNG but only listed 2 channels supported. If I add hdmi_force_edid_audio=1 to config.txt it adds support for 8 channels:
Code:
# tvservice -a
PCM supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max samplesize 24 bits.
     AC3 supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
   MPEG1 supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
     MP3 supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
   MPEG2 supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
AAC supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
DTS supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
ATRAC supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
DSD supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
    EAC3 supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
  DTS_HD supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
MLP supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
DST supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
WMAPRO supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
Extended supported: Max channels: 8, Max samplerate: 192kHz, Max rate 2040 kb/s.
.

Now when I check my tv it let's me switch to DD. But still my AVR does not recognize the (or any) passed through audio as DD and there is no sound at all (there is sound when I switch my tv back to PCM).

Any help what I can do?

Thanks

Have you enabled passthrough and AC3/DTS capable receiver in xbmc audio settings?

Most TVs are too dump to passthrough anything > 2 channels. My Samsung also does not understand AC3 via HDMI, but AC3 via "DVB-C" it understands quite well.

Btw. Samsung lists this in their Manual.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I have no option to enable passthrough under audio output. THere is no such option.

Ok, anyway, this is not per se a solution, but a much better alternative: I've found out my AV-Receiver supports "video-passthrough" via HDMI. So I've just connected my rp directly to the avr instead of the tv, and now I have 5.1 sound.

Thanks everybody
