Some questions before buying an Intel NUC
#16
Thanks jammyb I will contact Logitech support with this instructions, really I've updated my support ticket. I wonder how do you do your search because I'm doing it right now and I don't find the post, even using several options like search in title, playing with the display options and I don't find the thread, at least on the 2 first pages.

Really I've spent a lot of time this week looking for that and I don't explain how is it possible that I couldn't find it. Anyway thanks again.

I typed in "harmony remote delay" in search.

It's on the first page. Not difficult.

Yeah except you told someone about my harmony.com which was confusing to everyone but you.

Uh, yeah? You have to go to myharmony.com to do it! How else do you raise a support ticketHuh Just because I didn't give specifics on how exactly it's done. I gave enough information on where to find the info though!

6th post down in these search results.

"Harmony remote delay"

Fair enough it was 170 posts into a thread. But still. I do a hell of a lot of reading and searching before I post. No one will spoonfeed here. That's not necessarily a bad thing either.

You could have mentioned that it wasn't harmony.com per se but was really logitech support.

Nope, thank you very much, as you have a tendency to provide wrong/incomplete/misleading info Wink

Where have I been wrong exactly? Can it not be done? If yes. Then I am wrong. But it can be done!

Incomplete? I said it can be done and to search for it. I provide search results with it inHuh

Misleading? You have to go to myharmony.com to get to support! How is that misleading FFS!? If it were that imperative to go to Logitech and skip myharmony.com then I would have said!? I did it though myharmony.com support.

I don't even know why you're making such a big deal out of it? None of you bother to do as suggested. You just manage to make me spoonfeed it to you.

Well done guys!

Here's what I got ready to order, hope I have the right version of everything, am I missing anything that I will need? Planning on the i3 and I have windows 8 at home to use on it if I decide against openelec.

i3 NUC BOXD34010WYKH1 (This is the latest i3 model correct? With the drive bay for a SSD?)

2x2GB RAM (As long as it says 1.35v I should be good?)

60GB SSD

Harmony remote Logitech 915-000194 (Hoping to use this to also control my Samsung TV and my Sony 5.1 surround / blu ray player)

*If my main purpose is to just stream live TV shows, movies, sports and maybe HD sports if I find any, would the Celeron NUC be enough? As long as the menus are snappy I'm happy. I hear about lagging with some skins installed, if that won't be a problem with a Celeron processor, I can save a nice amount of money by going with that instead right? Only thing different is I'll need 1x4GB ram instead of the 2x2GB.

1. Yes, that is the latest Haswell i3 NUC with the bay for a 2.5" drive. Good choice, especially at that price. Don't forget you'll need a mini-HDMI to HDMI adapter or cable!

http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B00608WXGA?tag=adapas02-20

2. Is there any reason you're going with 2 x 2 instead of 1 x 4? I'd highly recommend the 1 x 4 just because it's a few dollars cheaper and it gives you the room to upgrade in the future, just in case.

3. Not a bad choice, but I think you could find an SSD a little cheaper than ~$1/GB

http://www.amazon.com/MyDigitalSSD-128GB...kGy3_0_0_0

The 128GB mSATA drive is currently $72.99 (as of this writing) - this will give you double the storage, while leaving your 2.5" bay free for an additional 2.5" storage drive if you want to add one. Or, if you like the aesthetics of the shorter NUC's, you can go with the NUC that only has the mSATA drive, although you would technically be losing out on extra functionality.

If you prefer a 2.5" drive, you can get this 128GB SSD for $75 with the coupon code listed on the page (good only through 2/16)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...8693&cm_sp=

4. I'm no expert on Logitech Harmony remotes, but I probably wouldn't spend $110 on a remote to control only 3 or 4 devices. Unless you need the extra smartphone functionality, or plan to add several devices in the future, I'd probably save a little money and go with the Harmony 650 instead.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004OVECU0

5. I have the BayTrail NUC with 2GB of RAM and a 30 GB SSD. It has worked quite well for playing 1080p mkv files just fine. Right now DTS and Dolby Digital passthrough aren't working yet (I suppose Intel is working on fixing it), and I also heard it's not powerful enough to play Hi10p/10-bit video files if that's important to you. Otherwise, for the purpose of streaming media through XBMC, it's quite snappy and works well. Apart from those potential issues, I don't think there are any other major disadvantages with the BayTrail NUC.

If you do decide to go with the BayTrail NUC, you'll have to get a 2.5" drive as its Mini PCIe slot won't take a full length mSATA SSD.

Unfortunately that's one of the few negative things about the Harmony 300. I use mine with Flirc and it's pretty good.

Ugh, Amazon.com won't ship those to Canada Sad The prices on Canadian sites are so much higher than the United States.

If I get the smaller Intel Haswell NUC without the 2.5" drive, I can still fit a mSATA drive in the case and install windows on it correct? I know the price total in the end would pretty much end up around the same place since mSATA are a little more pricy than the 2.5" SSDs, but I might consider going with the i5 then, and use the NUC for some other activities.

Well, I see these from a trusted Canadian site. Missing a remote but I'll look elsewhere for it soon, and have windows 8 at home ready to use.

i3 NUC (Box with 2.5" bay)
1x4GB Memory (Crucial notebook memory, says it is 1.35v so hoping it will run and fit inside the NUC)

For storage, if a HDD that's 2.5" will work and fit inside the NUC, then I can use one for media storage and get a mSATA SSD for my OS. Maybe something like

WD BLUE HDD 1TB
Crucial mSATA 120GB

If a HDD won't fit inside the NUC, I guess I can just get a 2.5" SSD and look into another means of storage down the road. Maybe a SSD like the following for OS and some other applications.

120GB SSD

Here's a USB flash drive I'm planning to get since I need one to install Windows with and I don't have a 3.0 flash drive yet. On sale too!

PNY 128GB Flash Drive

I'm looking to get a similar build. But going through all the NUC threads is a little bit confusing. It seems like there is no perfect setup.

Will the setup mentioned above do 24p with audio passthrough?

Also, when running OpenElec with the hardware listed above, what kind of performance difference would you see between an mSata drive and a USB3 SSD?
