Hello, long-time browser, first-time poster.

Unfortunately, I didn't see this hardware section prior to purchasing my setup, but thought I'd get some input on what I've selected thus-far:

Other: LSI MegaRAID 9240-8i 8-port PCI-E 6Gb RAID Controller (Purchased For $107.00)
Total: $1464.80

Note: I bought the LSI MegaRAID controller prior to finding the ASRock MB. I'll probably just use the 10 SATA slot on the MB and hold onto the MegaRAID for a later project.

I attempted to carefully choose components to maximize efficiency, minimize heat and sound for a 24/7 system, while maintaining better-than-required performance. (Also good enough to change to Windows as a fall-back for my noobish Linux tendencies).

I had the Seagate Greens from a NAS I'm looking to replace with this build, and added the WD Reds, hoping for better efficiency.

As far as OS, I'm planning on going with a Linux distro (probably Debian *maybe* CentOS), adding Plex Server and XBMC for the HTPC portion and installing Samba and the ZFS filesystem with RAIDZ for the 3TB drives and RAIDZ2 for the 2TB drives for better redundancy (more crucial files). Haven't tried XBMCbuntu, but figured for the custom stuff I want my server to do, I may as well start with a base kernel and build-up myself.

I did not add a stand-alone GPU because I believed that the integrated GPU in the i3 would be capable of 1080p playback. I'm hoping I'm correct, but more of a question is if my setup would work as a PVR as well. I added the tuner card more just to enable live-play through the HTPC, but if it's possible and not too much of a burden on my system, I'd like to add PVR capabilities as well.

Also, I've seen some concerns regarding Linux and BluRay play-back. Was buying the BR drive a waste?

I welcome to any thoughts, suggestions, concerns, rants or raves. I've currently got most of my system put together, but waiting for my last WD Red (or moving everything off my current NAS and transferring the Seagate drives) before I get this puppy booted up and configured.

I'd say don't worry about it. These drives are practically all the same price.
Good luck on the build. Post pictures!! Smile
