Linux Can't install XBMC on Linix unmet dependencies
#1
Problem 2: The Error is: Preventing me from installing XBMC

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xbmc: Depends: xbmc-bin (>= 4:12.3.1-dmo1) but 4:12.3.1-dmo1 is to be installed
Depends: xbmc-data (>= 4:12.3.1-dmo1) but 4:12.3.1-dmo1 is to be installed

What are the steps, 1,2,3, to fix this or get this resolved?

I must be missing something ( a step) here, as I see 4:12.3.1-dmo1

We are not the owner of those packages, I think that's debian multimedia. Even if those work I doubt you have much fun with those.

FWIW, I got the same error:

rory@OptiPlex-755:~$ sudo apt-get install xbmc
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xbmc : Depends: xbmc-bin (>= 4:12.3.1-dmo1) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: xbmc-data (>= 4:12.3.1-dmo1)
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken package

This is a brand new install of Ubuntu (12), and I simply followed all the instructions to download the Ubuntu 32-bit version of XBMC and install it.

I'm not a Linux geek, so go easy - I'm just getting used to using a terminal...

I highly doubt thats ubuntu, as you seem to use the same debian multimedia repo.
If it indeed is ubuntu, then you did something wrong. Use one of our PPAs. http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW..._for_Linux

OK, let me make this clear - here are the exact commands that I ran:

sudo apt-get install python-software-properties pkg-config
sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc

Why did I run these commands? Because that's what it says to run on the exact page you sent me to!

Sorry to sound snippy, but it's not working, even when I follow the instructions... Almost enough to make me go back to Windows!

Here is the terminal output:

http://pastebin.com/udAKtPWT

The important bit being at the end:

rory@OptiPlex-755:~$ sudo apt-get install xbmc

I appreciate the help you're providing. I really do. It's just, I can't see the problem - nothing obvious jumps out.

I told you that you are on debian multimedia. And its right down there in your sources
Code:
deb ftp://ftp.deb-multimedia.org/ wheezy main

Where on the Wiki does it say to add that to ubuntu? And now go and remove all that apt-get output from your post. Use pastebin for such things.

First off, thanks for pointing that out. When I got errors initially, I went on the web to find answers (bad first move!) and I added that line. So, my bad - you were right that I did something wrong Smile

Second, if I just remove that line, will XBMC install correctly, or will I need to add an equivalent ubuntu line (I assume not).

Third, sorry about adding the data - I'd never heard of pastebin until you mentioned it, but I was aware from reading other comments that not including all the information makes the job of people trying to help much harder.

So, thank you, thank you, thank you.

removing the apt source is not enough. Thanks to dmo bumping the version epoch to 4, it will be "newer" then every other xbmc package out in the wild. So you must uninstall xbmc and xbmc-bin, clean your apt cache and install it again.
