I elected to simply boot with my old 15.04 kernel, 3.19.0-31, which worked fine, rather than bothering with getting a mainline kernel upgrade. Just surprised that more people haven't had the same problem, which made me suspect that maybe I was doing something wrong.
you need to boot with 'acpi=off' as a kernel parameter with Ubuntu 15.10/4.2. I just found this out the other night myself.

this. the first post and wiki are up to date with everything you need. All issues/resolutions etc in the 360-some pages this far have been captured in the wiki, and the instructions continually refined.
