Rockchip RK3288 SoC based Android media players and XBMC experience?
#1
I am wondering if anyone got an Android media player based Rockchip RK3288 SoC and how your experience with it so far?

Many different Android media player boxes and sticks powered by it have been announced but only a few released to date.

For those who haven't read up on the RK3288 yet it is Rockchip's new flagship SoC, featuring Quad-Core Cortex-A17 series CPU running at up to 1.8GHz and ARM Mali-T764 GPU.

Other than have very powerful 3D graphics GPU and CPU for a cheap ARM SoC the most interesting thing about RK3288 from XBMC and media playback functionality point of view is that it features latest VPU hardware video decoding for 4K2K (4Kx2K/3840X2160) 8-bit H.264 and 10-bit H.265 / HEVC, and 1080p MVC (Multiview Video Coding) videos decode, and the SoC can support HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.X output at 4K Ultra HD (3840X2160) resolution at 60 fps but not all manufacturers will choose to go with a HDMI 2.0 port yet.

The announced RK3288 based Android devices from reputable manufactures I found so far to be "coming soon" are these:

- Tronsmart Orion R28
- Uyesee G1H
- Nagrace HPH NT-V6
- Eny Technology EKB328
- Kingnovel R6
- Kingnoval K-R68
- Beelink R28
- Ugoos UT3
- Ugoos UM3
- Rikomagic MK902 II
- Measy B4S
- MINIX NEO X9 (rumor only)
- Sunchip CX-920
- Sunchip CX-99
- Sunchip CX-998S
- OTT-928 / OTT928 / CS928
- Starlead Q8 / Neken M9
- OpenHour by CloudMedia
- CloudnetGo CR12
- CloudnetGo CR13
- CloudnetGo CR16
- 10moons D8+
- Zero Devices Z6C
- Artway Q8
- PMD OEM Box
- No brand MK903V
- No brand D368
- No brand B368
- No brand GK388

Once readily available and the firmware have matures a little I suspect that RK3288 based devices will be the go-to SoC for most XBMC enthusiasts because of its price verses performance ratio.

CNXSoft of CNX Software have posted a longer review of UyeSee G1H Rockchip RK3288 Android media player in two-parts here:

http://www.cnx-software.com/2014/08/27/r...id-tv-box/
http://www.cnx-software.com/2014/08/23/u...ip-rk3288/

Summary:
Quote:Conclusion

First, I’d like to thank Shenzhen UyeSee Technology for being the first company to send me a product based on Rockchip RK3288. The product is still new, and although there are positives, there’s still some work that need to be done. Compared to existing products, the main benefits of Rockchip RK3288 are HEVC video decoding and a 3D gaming performance unmatched by other Android TV boxes

PRO:
  • Fast new processor
  • Excellent 3D graphics performance for games, which for some reasons does not really show in benchmarks.
  • Both 720p and 1080p user interfaces are supported
  • Video Output – 1080p support 24, 25 ,30 , 50 and 60 Hz output which may be important for some videos. 4K will eventually support 60Hz thanks to HDMI 2.0.
  • HEVC video decoding support
  • OTA firmware updates appear to be supported (but I cannot confirm).
  • Webcam supported in Skype (although it did not work in Google Hangouts)
CONS:
  • Rare stability issues (1 reboot, one black screen over 8 hours of testing)
  • Lacklustre Wi-Fi performance
  • XBMC not pre-installed
  • Issues with some videos in MX Player (MPEG2, several HEVC/H.265 can’t be played, some audio issues)
  • Somewhat slow eMMC flash write speed potentially leading to slowdowns
  • Potential Gigabit Ethernet issues, at least confirmed with my switch (D-Link DSG-1005A).
  • No proper power off (standby only)
  • The device can get pretty hot (70+ C)
  • A few apps are not compatible in Google Play
  • Video output – Component only output the Luminance signal with my TV, composite has a green bar at the bottom
  • “TV” Launcher is only made for 720p resolution
I had quite a few problem with networking with this hardware. First Wi-Fi is stable, but relatively slow, and then the box did not want to play nice with my Gigabit Ethernet switch, but connection and performance were fine with a Fast Ethernet hub. Video playback is decent, but may still need more work, a version of XBMC with support for H.265 would be nice, but I’d assume at first all Rockchip RK3288 TV boxes will suffer from the same flaw, at least initially. If you’d like to play some 3D games this TV box will give you a much better experience than what you can achieve with the fastest Cortex A9 solution (Rockchip RK3188, Amlogic S802), and after testing the box, this is currently the main selling point of this media player.

You may find more information and/or contact the company via G1H product page. UyeSee G1H is not yet listed on their Aliexpress Store, but some hardware with similar specs, but different enclosure, can be bought for $90 including shipping on Aliexpress, so we might expect a similar price for G1H.

I have this one coming soon: (OEM Box)
http://www.hongxin88.en.alibaba.com/prod...v_box.html

I know its not branded product. but since its new and i believe this RK3288 will be around for a LONG TIME, the firmware support will be stable.

Further this box cost me only 101USD with DHL delivery to Europe. When buying minimum 20. So ordered 1 for testing will provide feedback once i get it.

UPDATE: The agent informed me that RK3288 chip is unstable at present and only by October this will be perfect. and therefore cancelled my order..thats interesting!

Tronsmart and Geekbuying have joined forces and are stated that they will now put their money where their months are to support Tronsmart Orion R28.
http://www.cnx-software.com/2014/08/29/t...droid-sdk/
http://promotion.geekbuying.com/promotio...pc_release

With that they mean that will both directly and indirectly sponsor or subsidise the development of XBMC for Rockchip RK3288 and firmware ROMs of R28.

Tronsmart Orion R28 Pro RK3288 2GB RAM / 8GB Storage / Quad-Core CPU 1.6GHz

Though a lot of other seller have released their RK3288 model, the tronsmart ones will be unique because the following:

2. Tronsmart orion r28 will be the first to have 4GB ddr3 ram android tv box;

Some info i found:

The Orion R28 will come in three forms. The Pro, the Meta and the Telos. The first comes with 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. The Pro also comes with 2GB of RAM but has 16GB of storage plus 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi. The Telos model won’t initially be available, but when it is released it will feature 4GB of RAM along with 32GB of internal storage and 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi.

Apparently there is a bug in this first batch. and i guess thats why they want to sell to only developers.

Just ordered one of these.

Hedda, as you see in the last three post of http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=203521 Open Hour has not proven its partnership with XBMC, and many users complain about firmware release dates, I'll wait for the second batch of Tronsmart Orion R28

Judging by your previous post I strongly suspect you must either work for VidOn or are a business-affiliated to them, which if is the case then your post here is just spam!

Regardless you post about a non-RK3288 based with a different older generation SoC is totally unrelated here.

Not containing competing hardware with HEVC/H.264 hardware video decoding support your media player isn't even an alternative to these, please go away!
