My 3yr old can spell his name multiple ways if I ask him. Alex, Al, Alexander. He can also count to 70 before getting bored so I assume it to be more than just a commendation for listening.
Personally, being a grandfather suits me much better. If one of my children had been given a commendation in their first year of school for "attempting to listen" yet not be able to say who they were listening to or what they said, I would have been somewhat limited in the praise I can offer. As a grandfather, I've been able to simply give praise to my grandson for his attempt It's so much easier!
I am not easily impressed, even by my own children
