Adding the advancedsettings.xml file is the first step. Then you need a source of artwork so lets assume you are using local artwork. Once the advancedsettings.xml file is added with the artwork entries, then the movies need to be Refreshed back into the library. When this is done, Kodi will rescan the local folder and load any extra images it now discovers.
Have you done that? Provide a Debug Log if you have and it is not working.
