FTP Freezing
#1
Very recently FTPing files to my HD has stopped working. I have a 300GB drive, with an F and G drive. I am on a wireless network as well. But everything works great, except when I use FileZilla (or any other FTP program that I've tried), and I start to FTP files, they go for a random but short amount of time then freeze. Everything else on the XBMC runs along (screensaver, music playing, RSS feed, etc), but FTP to it just stops. Quitting Filezilla and trying to connect again fails, the only thing that lets me connect again, is a restart of XBMC. Then Filezilla will connect again and let me upload a few more files before freezing again. Any suggestions?

idk if this is actualy a problem with xbmc but idk...i am having similar issues

i will be ftp'n files and about 20 mins into it or so (not really short periods) it will just stop (i use flashfxp) and the box is still fine everything running normally...only things that fix it are restart box or disconnect my hub (thats what makes me sceptical as to think its xbmc)...idk...

also xbmc has been freezing up on me quite a lot lately...just randomly too...like i would play n64 emu for like 2 hours straight then go to navigate to the music page and it would freeze on the way...but restart and go to music and play...then it would freeze randomly down the line tryin to swap pages again...

idk...im just waitin for 2.0 Big Grin keep up great work though Tongue

Random freezes could originate from a suboptimal BIOS.

Newer Xboxes use RAM that needs specific timing settings that aren't provided by older BIOSes like Evox M7. AFAIK Evox M8+ uses more relaxed settings.

Might be worth a try.

I also recognize this problem. I have it frequently, especially when there is a large amount of "small" files to FTP to the Xbox. They seem to take forever.

Moreover I quite frequently get the lock-out problem where the only option is to restart XBMC and start over again. Sometimes I also get a problem with the FTP client on the PC, and the only possibility is to reboot.

I thought the problem was my PC Filezilla but switched to another FTP client (Cute FTP) and immediatly got the same problem. So:

If I run Avalaunch on the Xbox I get the problem when FTP-ing
If I run XBMC on the Xbox I get the problem when FTP-ing
If I use Filezilla on the PC I get the problem when FTP-ing
If I use Cute FTP on the PC I get the problem when FTP-ing

I use the XP SP2 Firewall (on) and also have a Linksys router in between the Xbox and the PC, but since it do work from time to time I do not think that is the problem.

Any suggestions on what to do? Or anyone with similar problems?

/Don Tom

P.S. Thanks for an EXCELLENT application, to all of you that has spent so much time developing it!

P.P.S. I am sorry but I can't provide any logs, or more specific information atm but will try and do it later tonight. The XBMC build is from september 4th. At least something.......

CuteFTP is crap, try FlashFXP (or the FileZilla FTP-Client)
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.

i too had the same problem, very poor transfer rates, and huge pauses between transfers...then it would freeze, i could disconnect and reconnect only for it to crawl to a halt gain, i tried many ftp clients, but eventually pinned it down to the "keep alive" function of the ftp clients, i now use filezilla ftp client, disabled the "keep alive" function (this basically sends cmds to the xbox every few seconds to keep the connection open) and now i get higher transfer rates with no freezing...

i think "STATUS:> [2006-09-08 00:09:19] This site doesn't support the 'features' command." relates to the keep alive function not being supported...

....i could be wrong but for i know disabling worked perfectly for me

Yes, that was the client I originally was using. However I had the same problem with FileZilla.

This seems as a perfect match! Will try. Thanks for your reply.....

Not a problem Smile

If your using filezilla (open source ftp client available from http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezill...TkcmjKkAQ=)
you can disable the keep alive functions by going to Edit > Settings > Untick "Keep Alive System"

Unfortunately i don't use any other clients, but they should all have the option to disable the keep alive.

let me know how you get on Smile

First testings seem to work OK. Immediatly after changing the setting in FileZilla and FTP'ing the Xbox I got a block, but then restarted FileZilla and tried again. And it seems to be working.

I'll keep in touch with the thread, but do think this could be the solution to my problems.

Again - thanks. This has been bugging me for quite some time, sort of getting a bad feeling every time I am to upgrade XBMC or FTP something to the Xbox...

Nope. The problem still exists.

Seems as if I normally get one of three different errors:
  • FTP client (FileZilla normally, but same issue with CuteFTP) on PC crashes (not very frequent)
  • Filezilla server on Xbox locks up (reboot of Xbox necessary)
  • Connection problems to Xbox and all of a sudden there are to many users connected (reboot of Xbox required)

I also have the same old problem with transferring small files, which seems to take forever.

Is there a FTP client setting that I have missed? The "disable keep alive" did not do the trick for me.......

Sorry. No logs this time, but I will enable logging and hopefully also be able to present one soon......

I think the problem is that the ftp clients are trying to open more connections than the xbox can handle.

I was having the same problem, to fix this under CuteFTP I did the following:

Tools, Global Options, Connection, Changed Global max concurrent transfers to 2, and changed per site max concurrent transfers to 2.

I also turned off the Smart Keep Alive.

Transfers seem to work fine now.

Thanks for the update prx22,

To be honest ive not had to change the connection limit, BUT i did make some port forward rules on my router to allow the multiple udp conenctions (for passive mode) through for my ftp client (filezilla), this sounds like it could be related doesnt it. if i remember correctly filezilla opens up a data port and another random port plus port 21 for its passive mode.

In my FileZilla setting I do have 2 ports (default) for parallell transfers. Could it be that I should allow only one?
