Ok here's the second idea:
it's more emulator-core-focussed.
I apologise for the bad quality, I just put it together, traced it and scanned it in 5-6 mins, but it's just to give the idea of how it could work.
As you can see in this case you have a list of core-emulators and inside each you can map each controller.
I took the suggestion of adding battery status to the controllers that have one and you can assign controllers to player ports by clicking on "Assign pl. X" button and pressing any button on one controller (the other suggestion).
The mapped controllers have the tick icon at the top right.
Again any feedback is appreciated, keep in mind these are just starting points and can be vastly expanded upon if they are feasable.
