My TV service is IPTV over fiber. CAT 5e comes from the ONT box to a STB. I have an ASUS Chromebox with Openelec 5.0.6 and Kodi 14.2. Can I simply plug the CAT 5e cable into the back of my ASUS chromebox and use IPTV simple client or some other program to get dvr, live tv, channel guide functionality?

This whole time I thought I needed to buy some hardware or tuner or something to use my asus chromebox as a dvr. When I get home from work I am going to try it. I am very new to PVR so I don't much about it.

Does anyone know how to use IPTV from a legal service provider rather than internet playlists? Where to I look to learn about this?

I use URLs for my local network tuner, which is legal. Some internet providers also provide IPTV streams that can be used in IPTV Simple Client.

So I have to ask my TV service provider for a URL to put into IPTV Simple Client? hmm

Those files are kind of playlist. Look for .m3u files from your provider.
