I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that HDR passthrough wasn't supported, I was hopeful to be missing something. Unfortunately the RERO approach doesn't seem to be working for devs (no criticism here, simple observation, I'm sure there's plenty of valid reasons), as such I'm afraid we'll be stuck with suboptimal HDR for a long time.
